Replacement frame for Sig .229?

I recently made the decision to get some plating work done on my Sig .229 but made a critical mistake of sending my parts to a plating shop that's obviously very inexperienced in high quality plating work. Now that I've seen their work I'd be hesitant to let them re-plate a hydraulic cylinder from my 1961 ford tractor...

Any cheap online places to buy a replacement .229 frame?

Sigh..

The problem with replacing a frame is that you're replacing the part that the government says IS the gun. This means a new reg cert, also you'll get charged for a new "gun" if you can get one at all. Normally 'free' frame replacements are only done to fix a problem that is traced back to a production problem, then the factory takes the original frame and makes it's replacement and certifies to the Gov't. that they have destroyed the original and issued the replacement. It would be much better to have the plating removed by a pro and re-applied.

PS the importer for Sig is RNicholls, even if they say they have a frame it doesn't mean you can have it (this decade)

Unrelated (a little)... awhile ago I had the bright idea that "Chopping" a Glock frame would be cool. Well, soon after I realized it was stupid. It cost more than I would have liked but "Police Ordnance" (Glock dealer/importer) swapped the frames for a new one.

As mentioned it is like getting a new gun and losing the old one (as it is the registered part).

So... you need to find an official Sig importer/dealer if you want any chance of replacing the frame.

BTW, please post PICS :)

Get P229 .22 classic. The most cost effective to get a frame and as an added benefit a .22 conversion kit :)

If I'm correct he would need to buy the P229 Classic and the X-Change kit, which is about the price of a new P229 anyway. I think SIG modified the Classic frames so they do not accept regular uppers, only the conversions and original .22 slides.

Thanks for the replies guys.. That's what I was affraid of so I'm going to see if I can get this plate job redone first. One of the big problems with it is they did a horrible job of polishing before plating it and it's got bumps and ridges all over the place. I will try to get some pics up for you guys shortly..

Can anyone recommend a good plating company , pref located in Western Canada but anywhere will do really.

In my opinion it should be the Slide that's considered the gun. It is where the firing pin is located + barrel is housed . The frame of course being an integral part for operation but really just houses the trigger mechanism and magazine. I personally would love the option buying/having a selection of different styles of frames for my pistols..

Cheers,

Depends on the gun, some rifles have the upper as the "gun" (FAL/Swiss Arms) and some the lower (AR/RobArms). Pistols are generally (I'd say always but if I do someone will come up with an exotic oddball to prove me wrong) registered off the lower or frame.

This thread needs pictures. I'd like to see what kind of plating job they did.

Also, who was the plating company?

If your frame was aluminium, you should have had it hard anodized rather than plated. If it was in fact plated, they should be able to remove it (what type of plating?). Then the proper prep work can be done and the frame refinished.
We can help, but it depends on the type of finish you are looking for.
