I've been wondering about safety issues with replacement Mosin Nagant bolt bodies. The reason for my discomfort with these is that the bolt body has a third locking lug, and a replacement without proper fitting would more that likely be detrimental to the strength of the locking system. I realise that the front locking lugs are on the seperate upper portion of the bolt, but they seem to be designed to act together with the rear locking lug. I also note that the bolt body is fully numbered to the rifle. If it were not of significant importance that the correct bolt body be used then why bother numbering it ?

I have noticed that the design of Mosin Nagant bolt is amazingly similar to the old Mauser 71/84 bolt. The only signinicant difference between the two is that the Mauser has no locking lugs what so ever of the front section of it's two piece bolt, it relies entirely on the single locking lug on the bolt body.

I would think twice before firing a Mosin Nagant with a replacement bolt body.

Headspace is off the bolt head and will not be affected by replacing the bolt body. There is nothing you need to be concerned about replacing the bolt body.

The Mosin bolt is just like the 1903 Springfield bolt. The front two lugs are functional, the rear lug is not supposed to be force bearing, it's a safety feature in case either front lug starts to fail.
