Replacing Hammer and spring on Smith and Wesson 686 3

Would anybody know approximately what the cost would be, to replace the hammer and spring on a smith and Wesson model 686 3 ?

686-3 hammers at Gun Parts Corp. run between $40-60 US (unfortunately out of stock at the moment. Mainspring is $8 US.

why a new hammer?

Apparently the single action mode in my 686 was not working properly. If you pulled the hammer back to set it for single action, the least little pressure on the back of the hammer would cause the hammer to drop. I took it to a gunsmith and was told that the spring and the hammer would have to be replaced. I had some issues with the opinion of the said , gunsmith, and was seeking an opinion on this forum.

Sounds more like the sear and spring need replacing. The sear is the lever in the hammer.

Does not need spring, only hammer if someone filed the single action step off for PPC shooting only
