Who makes a good replica of the military style 1911? I'm talking lanyard loop, no extended controls, no giant "THIS IS A 1911 YAY" roll marks, etc. I've browsed a few but so far the only one I really like is the Cimarron, which is available in deep blued as well as parkerized. Anyone know if those are available in Canada? The SAM is not bad looking either, but I'm not sure of the quality. Any suggestions?

I have an Auto Ordnance 1911 in 45. I think I paid in the neighborhood of $700 taxes in for it new. Here's a picture of what they look like:

It feeds and shoots pretty good. I don't really have any specific complaints beyond the sights being inferior to other models (although that goes with the look). I mostly bought it because I've wanted a 1911 45 GI replica for quite a while and I really liked the look and feel of this one. The plastic grips are a little cheap looking but overall I'd recommend the gun.

I like the Springfield Armory GI the most of the replicas I've played with. Sure it doesn't have "authentic" roll marks on the slide, but I can live with that. I swapped an old USGI thumb safety onto it along with a set of repro brown grips, although it should probably have Rita Hayworth on it haha.

I've also been impressed with the Rock Island I bought last year, although its a little too fancy for crawling through the mud with.

The Colt is nice, but its also a big step up in price and it seems like they instantly enter "collector" status with a lot of folks. For a good solid shooter that looks and acts the part I'd say go Springfield.

What can I say? I'm an interwebz expert! Seriously though, I'd recommend a Springfield to anyone. First pistol I ever bought, I looked at a lot of em cause the wife told me it was the only one so had to make it count.

I have a Springfield GI now for about 2.5 years and it is reliable and a strait shooter. Made at the Imbel factory in Brazil. Not USA

I'm really liking the Remington R1 lately too. Not quite as accurate a copy of the GI models, but I think if you threw on an S&A arched MSH with lanyard loop it would look the part very nicely and incorporate a few nice perks.
