After seeing the letter on this forum about the support Michael Thompson has given us I only thought it right to write to him and thank him, here is his reply.

Thank you for your email regarding my position on the futility of handgun bans as a means of addressing gun violence. The criminal use of weapons in Toronto is a dire problem that needs to be vigorously addressed and acted on. However, a ban on handguns is not the answer. It will most certainly cost a great deal of money, create controversy and dissent, and divert attention from the real problem: effectively addressing the cultural and social conditions that lead to the use of firearms to settle disputes. There is no evidence whatever that hand gun bans work to reduce gun violence.

I hope you will support me in my efforts to generate action to address the real problem. If reason does not prevail, futile symbolic gestures such as Mr. Miller's hand gun ban will surely continue to arise as simple "solutions" to a complex and intractable problem.

Sincerely,

Michael Thompson
Councillor, Scarborough Centre, Ward 37

Mine says the same. :)

Well, the good thing is that he can now be referenced as one of the few on Council that have put some serious thought and obvious homework into the ban issue and is, for this reason, a credible individual.

I asked him if he thought about running for Miller's job but didn't answer that question. ;)

This should be moved to Discussions BTW.

There should be a copy of this letter in the "political forums".. It is good to have people like this on board.

I wonder if Miller ever sings "I got friends in low places"... Cause he can't have friends with anything taller than a snakes nut sack.....

Michael Thompson is the councillor for my part of Toronto, Scarborough actually.

During the "summer of the gun" he came forth with a proposal to give Toronto Police the power to stop young black men on the street, in cars, where ever and search them for illegal firearms. I imagine that was hard for him to do given he himself is a black man.

He was also the one who put the idea forward that if someone living in public housing is convicted of a crime, they should be evicted from that public housing.

I got the same reply. And two others. One was the nonsense from Miller. The other was from Howard Moscoe who said, "There is no reason on earth for handguns to exist."

I would like to suggest that we work hard for Michael Thompson and work hard for whomever runs against Moscoe. And Miller. Whether you live in Toronto or not. Heck, fly in and help!

Thompson's Scarborough constituency is relatively close to where I live so I am up for some practical support. I wonder if the Para-Ordinance factory is in his ward.

It would be Dulce et Decorum if we got this guy elected Mayor in the next election. It might be do-able. A black mayor might be a winning ticket among the TorStar reading crowd.

His ward is south-west of the Para ward.

I think Raymond Cho is the councillor for the area of Toronto where the Para factory is. Ward 42 Scarborough Rouge River.

If I'm not mistaken, Mr. Cho's head is firmly entrenched in Miller's ass.

As an aside, I bet Miller has no idea one of the worlds biggest handgun makers is located in Toronto.
