Hey all,

Been a while since I've been around due to moving across the country and starting a new life, but I've recently "rediscovered" my firearms due to having a bit more time (and money) to enjoy myself. My apologies if this kind of post is against the rules here; I tried a search but couldn't find much.

Anyway, I'm looking at finally finishing off my 10/22 SBR, and I need to source a barrel and have it installed (I assume this needs to be done by a competent gunsmith). I know that there's a bunch of places to get barrels in BC (and I'm looking at them for options during my next visit), but I wasn't sure if there was anywhere good out here to source 10/22 parts, and whether there's a good gunsmith out here that can fit a barrel once I get one. I know of Nova Tactical, Hnatiuks, and the Army Navy store, although they seem limited in their 10/22 accessories (although I haven't really looked that closely). I also tried contacting Walter through Nova Tactical about gunsmithing, but haven't heard anything back in a few days. Bass Pro Shops might be an option, but who knows when they'll actually get here.

Anyway, any recommendations for good local places to talk to about 10/22 parts (specifically short barrels) and installing a barrel? I'm in Halifax, but I'm open to anywhere good from Bridgewater, to Musquodoboit, to Truro, and Kentville. I'm even willing to go as far as New Glasgow or Moncton if I can get a decent price on a barrel and installation. I'd rather get a custom-made barrel, but I know there's a few commercially-available shorties available out of the States as well if anyone stocks them.

Cheers!

As for 10/22 accessories in NS. There is none.

Just get a Dlask barrel, and as for gunsmith to install it. It's a 22. Remove 2 bolts, pop the barrel out ( twist and pull, or pull the bolt back and let it slam against the bolt face ) Put the new one in. Align the extractor cut and tighten the bolts. Volla done. 10/22's are simple.

As for reputable gun smiths. Brian Desmond I heard was good, and Sam Adam.

What Walter can do, you can do. Being hes not a real gunsmith. He asks my buddy AR questions all the time.

Bass pro isn't coming till Fall.

Much obliged for the info.

I'm looking at either Dlask or Mystic Precision for a custom barrel, or trying one of the numerous site sponsors when I'm in Vancouver later this summer, but I figured I'd see if there was anyone local. I'd like to get a custom barrel made by Dlask or Jerry, but the last time I talked to Dlask about a custom-length barrel it sounded like they wanted me to charge me for one of their pre-made barrels, plus the cost of cutting it down and re-threading it. Maybe they didn't have any barrel blanks at the time and would need to actually cut down a barrel, but the cost was a bit more than I'd expected.

As for installing: I assumed it was as easy as just removing the V-block and swapping out the barrels, but I recall reading that the Dlask barrels are made slightly oversized for the receiver, and may need to get trimmed down slightly to fit. I also wasn't sure how touchy the adjustment was for getting the extractor and all to work. I'm all for doing it myself, however, so I appreciate the vote of confidence. I appreciate the info on the gunsmiths as well.

Shame to hear there's not much love for the 10/22 here though, although maybe the larger calibers are more popular out here.

Only barrels I heard that give issues are the alum barrels. Because they really get stuck in there. As for fitting. All the are going to do is take fine emery cloth and spin it around the barrel shank that goes into the receiver. Till it fits well.

Honestly it would be cheaper to get a pre fabbed, than a custom. And what type of custom short barrel you want?

I had 2 Dlask barrels, never had a issue going into the receiver.

Use extreme caution when sanding the barrel shank. Sanding should only be performed if you absolutely cannot get the barrel into the receiver. This includes putting the receiver in the oven to allow for expansion.

If it ain't tight, It ain't right.

Thanks for the info on the barrels.

The reason I'm considering custom is the length; Dlask has 12.5" and 8" barrels, but I'd ideally like something right at 9-10", preferably stainless (as I have a stainless receiver), and threaded at the end for a flash hider. The 8" barrel would end about 1/4" inside my stock, and (I think) the 12.5" would stick out a bit further than I like, so I'd rather just get something that suits me from the get-go rather than trying to muck about with it later. There are some Adaptive Tactical barrels that seem promising though, as they're about the right length and come with a compensator, although Wanstalls only seems to show the Charger Takedown barrel on their site, not a standard Charger barrel.

I appreciate the advice; hadn't even thought of putting the receiver in an oven to heat it up, although it makes sense. Fortunately I happen to have a spare toaster oven that would be just perfect for that.

Here's how to fit a "next-to-zero tolerance" barrel:

This is Tony Kidd fitting one of his barrels. Not that tough, really.

Ah yes forgot. Freeze the barrel, bake the receiver it should drop right in. Did that in college with a cam gear. Threw the cam in a garbage bag and threw it in the snow bank for several hours, then grabbed torches and heated up the gear. When It was time, ran out and grabbed the cam. Put it on the bench and a guy grabbed the cam gear and it dropped right on.

Kidd makes a 10" stainless 10/22 barrel. Might try and find a Charger 10" barrel.

Much obliged for all the suggestions on installing the barrel in this thread; good to know this is well within my abilities.

As for Charger barrels, this one looks promising: https://adaptivetactical.com/collections/tac-hammer-barrels/products/tac-hammer-rigid-core-post-tension-barrel-rail-combo-for-ruger-22-charger

Only downside is that it's not stainless, but it looks to be about the proper length for what I want, and the price doesn't seem to bad considering it's threaded and comes with a muzzle device. I'm expecting a barrel and flash hider will probably run me in the $250-300 range or so anyway. A Kidd would be nice, but I just want something that'll cycle bulk ammunition (and possibly subsonic) rather than being very accurate. If I can source a 10" or so barrel (preferably stainless) from Dlask or Mystic Precision in the $200-250 range, I'd be happy to go that route, although MP was suggesting a blued barrel due to cost.

I've been keeping an eye on the EE as well, but the last Charger barrel I saw on there was blued and not threaded, and the costs of getting it and having it threaded are comparable to buying a new barrel.

I may send Dlask an email and see what they can do. I want a few other parts from them as well (larger charging handle and all that) so I'll see about that at the same time.
