I've been looking to work up a load for my new Tikka T3 Hunter in .243, and have decided to try both the Hornady V-Max 87gr and SST 95gr bullets. The problem I have is that none of my new reloading books have these oddball sizes (not completely true, the Lee book has some loads for 95gr SPBTs). I'm guessing that Hornady must have something in theirs to more specifically cover the bullets they make in their load books.

The two powders I'm going to play with is Hodgdon Varget and H4350, so if someone has the Hornady book handy and could report back with a min, max, fps and pressure info for both bullets and both powers (if listed), I'd be really grateful!

Thanks in advance eh!

From Hornady #5

243 Win 24" barrel, 1-10" twist

87 gr. Vmax

43.4 grs H4350 MAX - 3100 fps

they don't show Varget, but Hodgdon.com does with the 85 gr. XLC-BT

38.0 grs. MAX 3212 fps

and Hornady #5 has 87 gr. Vmax data with two powders similar to Varget :

IMR 4064 - 37.1 grs. MAX - 3100 fps

RL15 - 37.5 grs. MAX - 3100 fps

-----------------------------

Hornady #5 is too old to have the 95 gr. SST data, and Hodgdon.com doesnt show 95 gr. loads either

you should be safely able to use 100 gr. load data though, as the 5 grain lighter SST should make less pressure.

Hornady #5

100 gr.

H4350 - 40.8 grs. MAX - 2900 fps

from Hodgdon.com

100 gr.

Varget - 33.7 grs. MAX - 2838 fps

H4350 - 40.0 grs. MAX - 2973 fps

Thanks guys!

I might have to break down and shell out for the Hornady #6 edition. I'm thinkin that since I'm trying to work up a deer load, I'd probably be better off with the SST over the VMAX even though the weights are fairly close.

For sure stick with the 95 gr. SST for the deer, it's what it was designed to do.

the 87 gr. Vmax is designed for small varmints and coyotes and would most likely ruin alot of meat and fail to penetrate very deep on a deer.

Yeah, I was wondering about that.. about how much those vmax would fragment verses penetration. I only run vmax in my .223, but then that's strictly for target until I find a patch of gophers that require exploding violently.
