Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

Currently the M6 Scout is the only factory rifle that fits this niche, and they are rare/expensive as hell, and do have some inherent issues. Several rifles/shotguns targeted towards the 'survival' crowd are available on the market but, IMHO, many have major drawbacks such as a proliferation of plastic parts, flimsy sights, poor actions, etc.

IMHO for a 'survival' gun the hinge-action is ideal. it is rugged, totally reliable, inherently a takedown action, and is extremely compact: a 14" barreled hinge action would be shorter/lighter than a 10" barreled 10/22.

a sight combo similar to the XS sights rail/ghost ring combo is not offered on any .22LRs, and would be ideal for a gun like this. those who prefer can mount a compact scope or a reflex sight, and due to the hinge-action design the sights/optics would retain zero even after takedown/reassembly, and not suffer from any receiver:barrel play issues like those plaguing shotguns, 10/22s, etc.

the barrel length/stock LOP could be tailored to come in at just over the min. OAL for non-restricted. it would result in a bombproof, compact and accurate 'survival' rifle platform, and also be ideal as a plinker and youth rifle.

i made the concept using a .22 from the Rossi Trifecta package, with a shortened stock LOP and barrel. the sights are XS sights ghost rings. both of these items are easily acquirable if a 'reference' is needed for the design.

just putting this out there as this is my idea of the perfect backpacking/survival rifle, and you can put me down to preorder two of them if you can build them under $400, and im sure they would be very popular with the backpacking crowd. down the road, a short 20ga barrel could also be offered to round out the kit. .22 Hornet could also be a possibility, as could pistol calibers such as .44 mag.

We would need some sort of plans to work from or a change to an existing rifle, to do it in China.

Why not get the Rossi?

the Rossi's barrel is too long, it has sh*tty plastic sights and trigger components, and in order to get the 18.5" .22LR barrel you have to order the entire 'Trifecta' three barrel set.

with M6 Scouts being scarcer than hen's teeth and ridiculously expensive, i believe theres a niche you can fill with something like this. it would also give you a platform to release further products for: like pistol cal barrels, short shotgun barrels, etc. you would have much to gain by going to a standardized platform - it would open up a market for aftermarket barrels.

the Rossi action is easily available for them to reverse-engineer.

come to think of it, depending on how satisfied everyone is with the Backpacker action, you could simply have them do a run of .22LR barrels for it.
synthetic stocks, decent integrated sights/rail like the XS systems sights, and you are good to go.

The BP action is just the old savage action, which I think is the same as the Rossi.

The plant no longer wants to make them, however. We'll see.

Wasn't there just a thread on those take down 10-22's? Get a take down 10-22 model! The action is proven, plus it is very lightweight, semi automatic and very accurate considering the price.

The take down 10-22 allows you to just remove the barrel, the firearm itself is very light and great to shoot.

Cheers!

I'd like something around the 4lb mark with good, sturdy sights and a taken down length of less than 18", and ideally, at about 16" oal when taken down.

I'd buy a Marlin Pappoose if I could find one...

Its light, has good sights, and packs up really small, and thin too. But I think Marlin has stopped making them to produce their new line of rimfires.

A new gun with a single shot action would be equally acceptable, as would any action really. The real thing I think we are all looking for here is some sort of reliable rimfire that fits into a real small package. And a single shot sure makes for a compact gun...

What about a:

barrel comes without sights, have a gun smith shorten the barrel and put on what ever sight system you would like.

A .44 mag. tube would be nice.

because spending $1200+ on a custom doesnt exactly appeal to me.

also you cannot cut a barrel below 18", but one could easily be manufactured at that length. look at how many people jumped all over the outlaws and backpackers. release an all-metal .22LR (and pistol cals, .22 hornet, etc down the road) that comes in at just over 26" and people will be all over it.

Get a take down 10-22 model!
how is the takedown 10/22 even remotely comparable? its huge, way overcomplicated, and its a semi with crappy rifle sights on the barrel. the accuracy potential/repeatability of the concept i posted would be far superior to a 10/22 and its factory sights or a receiver-mounted optic. and like i posted a 14" hinge action would be shorter, lighter, and takedown smaller than even a 10" barreled 10/22.

repeat thread x lots ;)

Look at a Ruger Gunsight Scout, it's .308, 6 pounds, and the .308 can drop everything from a rabbit (with a bb .308 load) to a grizzly or moose.

1. expensive
2. .308 is a long way from a .22lr
3. doesnt take down. its huge
4. huge protruding magazine is a totally unneccessary complexity for a survival rifle
5. plastic bottom metal/triggerguard/magwell is unacceptable, much less on a ~$1000 rifle
6. it says its 7lbs right there on the spec sheet
7. .308 is a long way from a .22lr

about the only thing it gets right is the sights, rail and mauser action. i own/owned 3 Ruger Frontiers, btw. here is one of them in .308.

this and a compact takedown .22 fill two completely different niches, IMO.

H&R has rifle/shotgun combos as well as a barrel accessory program. The .22 Sportster I have is a nice, simple, solid gun with iron sights and scope mountable with an included hammer offset spur.

Hard pressed to get decent sub-4lbs rifle. If weight is an issue, spend time dropping ounces out of your backpack or buy a lighter tent. There are ALOT of other ways to lighten your gear.

Or risk it and take a handgun. OP's description fits a handgun. Sadly we don't have personal sidearm laws like the USA <shrug>

Probably better to describe what role you want the rifle to fit. can the OP describe 'Survival' ? Is it to kill rabbits if you get lost hiking ? - then take a slingshot (weighs less than a pound). If it's to protect yourself from a bear, these .22's aren't gonna do it unless you stick it in its mouth and shoot through it's lower skull AND get lucky.

you are correct, if we lived in the US the niche could be filled with a handgun, or several other offerings. but we dont live in the US.

the success of the Backpacker indicates that there are many people out there that are looking for an affordable, packable, compact and simple backpacking/'survival'/camp type firearm. i have many guns - several short barreled rifles and shotguns - yet neither of them is ideal as a 'backpacking' gun. something like the AR-7 or Papoose is getting close, perhaps even the 10/22 takedown - but again each of those guns has major drawbacks.

a .22LR would be a natural progression of the Backpacker platform, and if successful (as it will undoubtedly be), it could be followed up with other barrels such as 20ga, .22WMR, .22 Hornet, .44 Mag, etc.

Anyone mention youth rifles?
