Requirements for RPAL Challenge

Hey all,

I did some searching and couldn't quite find a post that fit my situation, my apologies if this has been answered before.

I've had my PAL for a number of years, and in my asking around for taking the CRFSC you had to have completed the CFSC within the last 12 months, meaning I'd have to take both the CRSC and CRFSC together. I understand that you can simply challenge the RPAL (I do have some handgun experience, though none with revolvers) and could very likely pass the challenge no problem.

My question is - can I simply challenge the RPAL? Or would I have to have received my PAL within the last 12 months?
 
What province are you in? I've heard of CFOs in some provinces like Ontario that try and impose restrictions like that, but to my knowledge, it's not based anywhere in legislation.

Go and challenge the course.

"...within the last 12 months?..." Hi. There's nothing in the law that says that. You can challenge either test at any time. Read the RPAL manual and you should be fine.
In Ontario you will be required to do a CPFO mandated, club level, safety course anyway. Some club charge a fee for said course.
 
I'm in Ontario, GTA- everyone I've talked to about courses mandates that I can't simply take the CRFSC without having taken the CFSC within the last 12 months.

It's sounding like there's no reason I can't just challenge the exam after doing a brush up on my handgun safety and reading the RPAL manual.

This is good news, and leaves me with some extra bucks towards picking up a handgun. Thanks for the responses!
 
You can just challenge the test. The 12 months time frame is the Ontario policy regarding eligibility to take the 6 hour version of the CRFSC. If it has been more than 12 months since your CFSC, they want you to repeat some of the modules that are in common between the two courses.

I have owned restricteds for 30 years and only got a POL initially as I didn't think I would buy anymore restricteds. 2 years ago, I changed my mind and decided to go for the CRFSC.
The instructor saw my PAL with a 12 classification and knew my knowledge with firearms was pretty sound. He told me to read and study the course pack ( available on the RCMP site) and to challenge both the sections ( R and non-R). The only stipulation was he could not help, clarify or give hints during the test. If I failed, I would have to take the entire course and forfeit the challenge fee which was $50/ test. I scored perfect 100s on all sections. He signed it off, we talked guns for an hour after that. Entire exam took me about 1.5 hours. Easiest way to go if your province allows it. The hard part was waiting for the actual PAL/ RPAL, took about 3 months! BTW, I'm in BC.
