Ball's book does not really show this version. It is Belgium manufactured but only has the eTHOPIAN acceptance mark (lion of juda) engraved on front left side of receiver. No ethopian crest on top front of recv like in the mauser book? That spot is clean washed? Trying to find out if it was just missed at factory and rifle made it to ethopian imperial guard?

serial number is low 105x font is large located left side rear recv just above bolt release as per normal...

any ideas why no crest?

You're likely going to need pictures for the experts to help you. Where's Smellie when you need him? lol

All I have for now. markings on bottom of butt, side view showing the lion of Juda, rear top left recvr showing serial. Now if you look closely at the acceptance crest then pan towards the top of the receiver I do notice a discoloration of the metal not sure what that is, but you can see that the top of the receiver is smooth not ground off, but maybe its acid washed.. I dont know how they removed a crest if they did that. but you would have to remove a few millimeters of metal to get the engraving out...

appears ground off. get a compass and protractor set and draw a circle the same width as the receiver ring , cut it out and lay it over the top of the ring .if there is a space between the ring and the paper it has been ground.

Based on the colouring change on the receiver, I would say the crest has been ground off.

What can be seen in a picture isn't always seen with a naked eye. Sometimes, a flash will affect colours too. It certainly looks like some buffing went on on picture #2. It actually looks like the sidemarks were intentionally left un-buffed.

Looking forward to what some of the aficionados have to offer, as I have no personal experiences with a gem like this.
