I just sighted in my Sako 7mm-08 recently. It has a Zeiss 3-9 x 40 Conquest scope on it. The instruction manual for the scope says to"pull up dial(10 or 12) out of the click stop mechanism and set the zero mark of graduated ring to index mark.
I know how to do this but how will this be an advantage? It is a hunting rifle sighted in for zero @ 200 yds. I won't be making adjustments in the field.
Am I missing something here? Your comments/suggestions are appreciated. Cheers Roscoe

"Sighted in", and "Zeroed" actually mean different things. In your example your rifle is sighted in for 200 yards. When you reset the dial to show zero at that range it is now also "zeroed" at that range. If you don't plan on dialing elevation or wind, changeing loads or doing anything other than setting it and forgetting it, then there is no advantage for you.
The reference marks are so you can crank it all over without getting lost. Most hunters are set it and forget it guys, and for most people that is probably their best move. On the other hand, it doesn't cost anything to zero the dials, I don't know why you wouldn't want to.

Kind of what I figured, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the info. I think I will do it. Cheers

Ziess has the best return to zero on the market. Hence why Vortex used there same idea when creating there Viper hunting scope line-up.
Once the scope is sighted in. Simpley pull up gently on the turrets and turn them to 0. Then when calculating windage or bullet drop's you can simply count the clicks. Once done it's as simple as turning back to zero.
P.S. If you still can't figure it out I accept all types of donations. Including scopes and rifles :p
