i just got a press that my father-inlaw left me set up.tried to resize some 30-06 once fired brass.out of 20 brass, had 3 stick in the die one bad enough i had to use an extrator to get it out.they were all lubed well.some of them resized really easy and some i had to go it stages a little bit at a time.after doing the 20 brass, one of which i cound not get into the die far enough to decap it.any ideas what could be causing these problems.the press is a lee/lyman C frame press.the die is RCBS.at that rate and how my hands felt after doing 20 i would not have wanted to try resizing a couple hundred.i have another 9 boxes or so.the press and dies have not been used in at least 15 years, could the die be dirty inside?did not see any rust in it but it is possible.any info would be appreciated.

If they were put away oily, they may have gummy oil varnish on them. Strip the dies down to bits, scrub the innards with fine steel or bronze wool and oil, and reassemble. Have a good look around inside them with a decent light, while they are apart. Pitting from rust will be fairly apparent if present. WD40, a couple popsicle sticks, and an SOS pad that has been rinsed clean in hot running water, dried out, and oiled heavily, if you are an apartment dweller short on space. Use real oil after the cleaning. WD40 is crap, as far as preventing rust goes.

They properly set up?

Is the press a hand only type, or a convertible hand/bench type? Is it assembled correctly?

What were the cases shot out of? Different firearms? Unknown? Loose chamber=bigger case=more effort to resize=shorter case life due to resizing working the brass. If all cases were from the same rifle...?? Same load?

the press is a bench mounted press.it is assembled the same as when my father inlaw used it i never touched it.the die is set to just touch the ram at the top of its stroke.all winchester brass fired all from same rifle same weight bullets same box/batch/lot.do not have a tumbler but if it will make a big difference i will look at getting the tumbled, always thought they were tumbled after resizing/decapping.

threw away the old sizing lube the father-in-law had and got new.resized and decapped 3 boxes/60 rounds in about 15-20 mins.even resized some of the ones i couldn't get to resize before.the new lube seems to be thicker than the old stuff.

The proper lube makes all the difference. I usually put a little bit inside mouth of every 5th or 6th to help in completing the sizing procedure. Just a little does it by rubbing the mouth across the lube pad or off of the tip of your finger. Have fun
