OK.. so here I sit resizing some Lapua 243 Win Brass to load and form for my 260AI. I am using the Redding Type S Match dies. I lubed with Hornady spray lube and sized three.. the necks are all #### eyed when they come out. I thought wow .. maybe not enough lube.. went and got out the imperial sizing wax and laid some on. Still the same.. so no that i have done 6, I am going to ask the question.

Is this normal?? I have necked brass down before but never up.

Thanks

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing or not....but....you might be using too much lube actually. I've wrinkled 300 win mag, and 30-30 case shoulders by having too much lube on the outside of them. Lubricant takes up space. Dies, when in contact with the case have zero tolerance. If you've got big gobs of lube in there when the pressure goes on, something has to give. It won't be the die, and you can't compress a liquid. The brass is the only thing left. If you could post a pic of your bent brass, it would help.

i will try to get a pic up.. it isn't that it is bent.. just lopsided on the case mouth i guess.. i can trim but it is a pain. If there is a solution that doesn't involve trimming i am looking for it..

wild guess - are you using the right shell holder - the wrong holder might not be centre the case in the die properly.

Are you trying to expand the neck from .243 to 6.5 in one pass?
Might be an idea to do it more gradually, either with a tapered expander or with an intermediate .25 expander.

Sounds to me like you nicked the mouth of the case on the underside of the expander ball or expander mandrel when you went to expand it.

I did this to a few of my 308 cases when I went to expand the neck to turn them after forming to .260 Rem

Are you talking neck run-out after necking up the .243 cases, or uneven mouths? I have little luck in getting staight necks when necking up with an expander ball, and even less with neck sizing dies. You may want to look into Sinclair expanding mandrels. The good part is they will come out the chamber straight after the first firing. This is routine with .35 Whelen and .338 Edge.
