Hi, I'm just getting into casting. I shoot 30-30 and was able to pick up a lee .309 mould. My question is, as .309 is the size I need, do I still need to find a .309 sizing die? Or do the bullets pretty much come properly sized when cast?

with lee mold regular basic you don't need to size but you have to crimp your gas check and the only easy way to crimp is to use a sizing die

for the size 0.309 " is suppose to be the right but depend of your barrel 310 or 311 can be the way to go, to know you have to slug your barrel and going at least 0.001 " bigger than your bore size or you have to shot it and see the accuracy and the leading.

The marlin rifle with micro groove generally need 0.311 " the win 94 go from 309 to 311 (mine need 311 for accuracy and no leading) your barrel, the hardness of your lead, the speed and pressure of your reload have effect on the size bullet to go, lead bullet need more testing than regular jackeret reload if you wish to have the same accuracy but when you find the perfect match it;s awesome

No reason to believe that the mold you bought will actually produce a .309 bullet, unless you use exactly the same alloy mix that the die maker designed the die for... See, for example, Accurate Molds, who specify the allow mix to be used in their dies. Lee might publish their design alloy, but I have not seen it... The Lee push through sizing dies work just dandy - least expensive way of getting a bullet sized and gas checked, and comes with a container of their lube.

Lee moulds are usually pretty close in diameter, but are not always perfectly round. I'd size for sure. I've lapped a few of my moulds to enlarge them a few thou with excellent results.

I always use sizer larger than boolit that will go in it.311 for 309,313 for 312,330 for 325 etc.
With alloy I'm using I need as large boolits as I can possibly make with given mold.
