After the last couple days of info overload and almost deciding to stay in bed this morning I called myself a pussy and got on with life. I will be clear, the official line of certain weapons not being fit to hunt I took the same gun I have been using last year and this past week. The Governer General, Ottawa Willie and Blairing Bill can go right straight to hell and I will hold the door.
Back to business. After a very slow week this morning started to look up as there was at least some gobbling. I will say quarantine sure cuts down on the ambient noise in SW Ontario in the mornings.
Turkey is gobbling in the bush I am in but at least 8-900 yds to the west. He eventually starts to work my way.
20 minutes of little gobbling I hear him behind me and then I hear him come out in the field. Now he is on a string to the decoys but about 45 yds. Works into 20 yds and he enters a shooting lane, red dot on his head, squeeze the trigger and CLICK. Turns out a bad primer as I tried it in a pump after.
I know damn well I loaded the rig and now turkey at 20 looking right at me. Go deep or go home has been my motto so crank it back and yep shell ejects. Bird looking now in strut. Drop the charging handle, which I am damn glad I switched to the left side for some unknown reason, and smoke his 20.5lb azz.
Due to commitments last year it was the first in 21 years of turkey hunting I never shot a bird. This one felt GOOD!! So I decided to put all my woes aside and just sit and enjoy the morning with a thermos of coffee and a dead turkey in the decoys. Best decision I have made in a long time and was able to put few things in perspective and yes the sun did come up today so all is not lost.
