As many of you are aware, Black Creek Labs made a 20 round magazine for the Bison rifle for .223 Rem/5.56 NATO & 300 BLK. This magazine is legal to use in the MRA Renegade and works very well. The question is: How do you make it work? It does require a tiny bit of modification.

  • How do I make the MRX magazine work in the Renegade?
If you have a standard magazine and an MRX magazine side by side, you will see that there is a ridge, or spine that runs up the back of these magazines. You should note that the MRX mag has more material at the top. All you need to do is get a file and remove about 1/4 inch from the top of this spine so that it more closely resembles a standard magazine.

We strongly suggest you go at it slowly, as once material is removed it cannot be put back. Once this is done, you can compare the different magazines and file as needed to make the top rear of the MRX magazine as close as possible to a standard magazine (Pmag or cross mag etc.)

Some people also file very gently at the feed lips, maybe one or two passes maximum with a file to smooth out feeding, but this is not strictly necessary.

Pictures to follow!

I will add to that. Remove the lower and each time you remove some of the back spine of the mag, try a test insert into the lower. What you are looking for is to determine if the spine is lifting the bolt catch. It should not move at all. If it does contact and lift it, remove the mag, remove a little more of the spine and test again. As for the lips, with the rife assembled and the mag spine material removed, note how the bolt drags on the mag lips. If there is some take only a light swipe with a file and retry.

As VRS said you can't put the material back on so take your time and be patient. If your in the Fredericton area I will do it for you for free over a beer in my shop. To do a good job takes about 30 minutes a mag.
