I have taken posession of some guns on my parents farm and had found them in sad shape - covered in rust and significant stock damage (especially on the Cooey 22).

I decided that I would try restoring them and if it didn't work out - oh well, not to much lost.

I started on the 22 as it was the worst. The bolt would open only with great difficulty and the bore was nothing but a hazy hole with no lands or grooves visible. Stock damage was bad. The barrel was pitted with rust. This gun was bought from Mcleods hardware store some 50 years ago. It was the first firearm I remember shooting and accounted for a pile of gophers, some rabbits and a few skunks.

This is what they looked like when I found them.

Definitely, Minute of Grouse

Next week I'll go grouse hunting and see if I can capture the same feeling I had when I was just a young lad on the farm then I'll start on the shotgun.

I sanded the stock down (first coarse, then fine) and used 2 coats of Tru-oil (letting them dry and using fine 0000 steel wool to buff between and after coats). I finished it off with 2 coats of Birchwood Casey Gun Wax.
