Ok, so I have an old FN SxS boxlock shotgun that I would like to have restored. It was given to me by my Grandfather and has been in the family (in some form or another) for about 90 years, so you can appreciate that it has a great amount of sentimental value. Judging by the engraving on the receiver, and the grade of wood, it wasn't an entry level shotgun when it was new (it's no Purdy though). The hammer on the right barrel needs to be repaired or replaced, it has come off face, and it needs a good professional cleaning up. I'd like to be able to shoot it again and use it, but in it's current condition, I don't think it is a good idea to do so.

Now, the question is, who is a gunsmith that would both be willing and able to restore it? I'd prefer one that specializes in European shotguns. I know it will be an expensive project (likely will cost much more than what the gun is worth), but I'd like to have it done right, and hopefully be able to pass it on to my grandchildren.

I have had several guns restored professionally. Problems fixed, stock refinished, barrels re-blued, receiver re-case hardened, engraving re-done etc. From what you describe it could vary in cost between $1000 and $4000 depending on who does it, the quality of the job and how extensive the restoration.

Think long and hard about whether you really want to go down that road. If you decide you do, PM me and I will send you the names and contact info for several of the best.

Oh, and be prepared to wait. LOL

It shouldn't cost too much to replace the hammer and bring the gun back on face. If this makes it safe to shoot, then as already mentioned, I would think hard before spending a lot of money on further restoration. Besides, some of the condition is testament to its history with your family.
