Cool looking additions. I held a fully matching artillery(i think) model once. $12k price tag. The wooden butt stock was its holster.
This was a good thread to open. I didnt think that there were any restricted firearms left for sale or transfer in our messed up nation.
I believe this one is considered a rifle because of how the stock attaches. There is no pistol grip inside it. The one you are talking about is a handgun and subject to the freeze (unless antique with the price tag of such things). There were also some made with long barrels but the fixed stock had the pistol grip hidden inside the wood - those are still viewed as handguns.

I'd bet the above mentioned kidney it's 7.63.

But think about it. If you had it rebarreled with an 18.5" barrel it would become non restricted, and you could rechamber to 9mm in the same motion.
Two considerations:

There is no NR child in FRT entry 147284 so that would have to be a part of the process and you know how long that takes now.

These are quite rare and valuable. You shouldn't mess with the barrel. It is possible to get another upper and have that converted to 9mm/long barrel and I would suggest that route.

Beautiful piece indeed even if “Not a factory gun and parts are not serial numbered”. Web search suggests a real factory original C96 Carbine is ultra rare in the thousands
