Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to make sure I am storing my firearms safely and to Canadian Code. I have gone online and called the CFO and have gotten different response. Can someone confirm if the below storage is correct.

Stored at home
Restricted Pistol stored in a locked safe not triggered locked. In the same room locked in an ammo box is the ammo and a loaded magazine. One thing I have not done yet is bolt the safe to the floor hoping to get around to it next weekend. If I where to leave it like that in-bolted would it not be to the storage laws?

During Transportation
Restricted Pistol locked in a metal case with a trigger lock on it. Ammo stored in an ammo box also locked and both stored in the trunk?

Thanks T

How about the loaded magazine in the ammo box? Some have said a loaded gun can be in the safe. Are either of these allowed?

I was under the impression that if your restricted is stored in a "safe" you can legally have a loaded magazine next to it as long as it is not in the weapon.

As for transport, during the RPAL course they suggested also throwing a copy of your ATT/LATT in with the case with the pistol.

Thanks I was also told that as well. I have copies of my ATT in my car and ammo box. I also have copies of ownership or whatever it's called on my ammo box as well for all my firearms.

You should have the transport and storage regulations in your Firearm Safety manuals. There is also an RCMP pamphlet called SAFELY STORING TRANSPORTING AND DISPLAYING FIREARMS. I advise all of my students to carry this with them when transporting in case they encounter a police person that doesn't know the firearms act, but think they do. "They walk among us". For Restricted, must be stored unloaded and trigger locked in a securely locked container not easily broken open or into. Ammo stored separately or WITH the firearm IF in a securely locked container. If in a SAFE, doesn't have to be trigger locked. SAFE has to be designed and marketed as a safe. In my opinion, a sheet metal gun cabinet isn't a safe. For transport, trigger locked in a locked opaque container. Same rules for Ammo.

So if I understand bushwhacker correctly if I have a true safe I can store a restricted firearm in it with the ammo and a loaded magazine in the safe just not in the firearm? Ammo does not need to be locked up separately in the safe and the firearm does not need to be trigger locked?

Can you post the link to that pamphlet?

Thanks T

If it's a "real" safe, I don't see any issue. If it's a Canadian tire "Stack on" thin steel safe, I'd bolt it...

My safe is not bolted to the floor; With all the ammo that's inside, it probably weight around 800lbs++ so if someone manages to get it out of the basement, they can have it :)

Does not need to be metal. It can be metal, plastic, nylon. As long as its lockable. I personally have my handguns, action locked in a locked plastic case, said plastic cases are then put into a 5.11 patrol ready bag along with all ammunition, and all locked together.

Where does it say has to be a safe only....it says it has to be a unit that is manufactured or modified vault, safe or room specifically to store firearms...thus ...the way I read and I been told this includes the Cdn Tire units. you can store ammo, clip and gun in this unit as it is designed for this.

Yes it is a little easier to get into than an actual fire rated or anti breakin safe...but you can buy a non rate safe that is just as easy to get into as the cdn tire units.

Your right it doesn't say safe only.

The methods you described in the first post are legal and also there is no requirement to lock up your ammo.
