restricted M1 or non restricted

As I <3 M14 stated, it is barrel length alone that makes most M1 Carbines restricted. The standard length of a USGI M1 Carbine's barrel is 18 inches, so it falls under the minimum length of greater than 18.5 inches required for a non restricted semi auto. Some commercial models were made with non restricted length barrels, and at one time there were longer barrels produced so that many a USGI M1 Carbine were reclassified as non restricted.

Goes back to 1978 too. Rumour, at the time, had it that Carbines were restricted because bike gangs were finding them easy to hide under coats. Most likely nonsense though. Criminals don't care what the law says.
A lot of odd stuff was made evil in '78. Blow guns, nunchuks, shuriken and morning stars were declared prohibited too. As close as we could figure, there were too many Medieval, ninja, pygmies holding up variety stores.

Careful now. They're still out there, and could strike anytime....
