I am a big fan of the single stack Smith & Wesson 9mm autos (models 39/39-2/439/639/3906/ etc.). No other handgun seems to fit me as well, and they shoot exactly where I point them. However, their prohib status makes it dificult for me to buy them.

While farting around the other day with the RCMP database search engine on the Ottawa Citizen website, I noticed a rather large number of these guns are registered in the system as "restricted."

Does anyone own, or know of someone who owns, one of these "restricted" guns? I would offer top dollar to buy one (or more) of them.

Numrich sells the 4.25" extended barrels for the 39 and 59 series for 59 bucks US so its a cheap conversion. The only issue is waiting for the export permit and whatnot.

I have seen a few CPCA shooters that have 106mm barrels in 5946's. They are made by bar-sto and shoot really good. Questar imports bar-sto barrels, so just hunt around the gun shops and find yourself a nice 39, put a deposit on it, get a barrel from questar and have it reregistered. Model 39's seem to be around 450 bucks used.

Good advice. Unfortunately, Numrich is sold out of the extended 39 barrels, and Questar has confirmed that the barrel makers it deals with are no longer making extended S&W barrels :( .

Beretta Type M

I don't know if this helps, or if you have your heart set on a S&W, but the Beretta Type M is a single stack 9mm and is restricted. I haven't seen many come up for sale though.

I believe the there were two types made; The 92FS Compact Type L, which was double stack, and the Type M which was single. I used to have a 96FS Type L which was .40S&W, and which I now regret selling. I don't think there was ever a single stack .40S&W

The RCMP database is full of errors. It has some AK's registered as restricted/non-restricted (and I'm not talking about Valmets).
