I'm going to start a custom build soon with a Remington 700 Long range. Are 10 round magazines legal on a bolt action or is 5 the legal maximum just like semi autos?

It depends on the magazine. What magazine would you be using?

I have no idea yet.... I found this with a quick Google search but I would rather get one locally if possible.

Plus I have no idea if I'd need the whole assembly or if I could get away with just the magazine. I'm still fairly new to this and this is going to be my first "real" rifle so suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

the bottom metal you use will dictate what magazines will fit. you cant just jam a mag in a stock 700 bottom metal. there is no Mag limit on bolt actions, BUT if the magazine used is made for a semi auto (ie AR mags) they will have to be pined to 5rounds . with a few loop holes (LAR 15 mags, .50 beawolf mags) etc

Sigh.

It is NOT a loop hole. It is the LAW.

X2 the difference is what it was designed for vs what else may fit. What it was designed for is what matters. That's why it's important all pistol mags used in centerfire rifles say for example the lar-15 pistol magazines.

Guys, your all techinically wrong. Semantics are very important. It's not what magazine you USE in a gun. It's what gun the magazine was DESIGNED to be used in.

If the magazine was DESIGNED for a manual action rifle - unlimited except for a lee enfield (10 rounds max)
If the magazine was DESIGNED for a semi automatic - 5 rounds max.
and obviously 10 rounds for a pistol commonly available, 5 if it's not. blah blah blah.

Sorry to be anal, but that's how the law is written, and we best know it to the detail.

so...at the risk of flogging a dead horse on this one...but the Mossberg MVP bolt action rifle uses AR15 magazines, my train of thought is that if a person were to "design" a magazine specifically for that bolt action gun and have it marked as such....you could effectively have say a legal 20 round magazine if you so desired or am i looking at this the wrong way?

and there is no restrictions on magazine capacity for any rimfire long arms -hence the 25 round butler creek mags for 10/22- there are also no restrictions on mag capacity on long arms with manually operated actions (bolt, pump, lever...dont think I'm missing any). i called the canadian firearms RCMP office about it on a bet last year...the local fort mcmurray detachment was sadly in the dark on it however when speaking to the people out at the firearms office in NB they were kind enough to actually look it up for me and put up with my pestering about clarification.

The MVP is expressly marketed and sold as using AR-15 hence any mag for the MVP is an AR-15 mag

This is Alberta. There are no mag limits for bolt, pump, or lever action rifles while hunting. Semi auto rifles have a 5 round limit while hunting big game.

Ditto in BC, read the regs, the only thing in there to my knowledge expressly written in regards to mag limits is in regards to mag limits is in reference to upland game bird hunting and use in shotguns (No more than 2 rounds as would be in a SxS or OU but must be plugged in a pump or semi auto, feel free to correct me if I am wrong). Also if you want more rounds I forget which company it is... No wait! Archangel makes a stock for the 700 that has a 20rd mag.
