Just browsing online at lebaron, and noticed this odd bit;

Please Note:

To purchase a firearm, you must provide a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (P.A.L.) number, along with your birth-date, place of birth, and permit
holder's address. To purchase ammunition you must provide a valid P.A.L. or a Possession Ownership Licence (P.O.L.).

Is this normal? I'm not at all comfortable with that, given it's the same info they ask for when doing a credit app or even calling in a lost credit card.

It's normal... and the only way to verify your PAL... suck it up..... you gave it to the RCMP in your app... you should have no issue repeating it to a firearms retailer

Ok, cool. I gave it to the RCMP - a government body that already knows where I was born. This is my first firearms purchase so it took me by surprise.

Thanks for the quick replies!

When registering a new purchase you have to provide your city of birth. That's just a password that is required by the CFC. I work in a retail outlet selling guns. You'd be surprised how many times this gets bogged down because the buyer doesn't give the correct city. Here's an example. City of birth please! Toronto. Sorry no go. Whaddya mean?..I know where I was born. Yeah well, do you remember when you applied for your PAL what you put down on your application? At that time some said Scarborough, York, Etobicoke..etc... Now those cities don't actually exist anymore...but that's what they put down at that time and that's what the CFC HAS to go by. So a call to the CFC usually clears that up. However some foreign countries are more problematic. I had one guy call his mother in Turkey to confirm his place of birth because he couldn't remember what he had put down. LOL.

Canada wide... they aren't supposed to put it through without it... when your retailer goes online to make transfer it asks for your place of birth,... they have no way around this...

Picked up my first firearm yesterday, and they did ask. Awesome guy behind the counter, said it's fairly recent (last couple months?), and it was stupid "to start changing things now, when it's about to go the way of the dodo bird". Anyway, he was just the kind of guy you really wanted to see behind the counter - educated, older hunter type... clearly old school when you saw how clean his handwriting was.

My cousin was a us air force brat, he was born in Pyeongtaek south Korea, BPS once typed it in 8 times till it worked. The CFC office called him to verify the writing as well to ensure it was done right.

Really....... its just a birth place. Your location is on your account here, seems you were fine giving that away

I was not born in Hamilton. It was just an odd question to me, having never bought a firearm before and having never purchased from this store before. All went well, I have my temp reg, awaiting the all-hated card in the mail.

I am a number. :(

As stated previously, it is only required for on line transfers. Not asked if transfer done on phone.
On line transfer is easier for retailer and we can print a copy of the transfer when completed so you have a copy of the registration number on RCMP letterhead form.
