I have a few norinco 1911s in 45 that I would like to convert to 9mm.

Likely a slide, unramped barrel, bushing, slide stop, ejector, magazine.. I want to try first going unramped and seeing if it'll run and be reliable.

Anyone out there have a recommendation for a supplier for the parts in Canada? I wouldn't mind fitting everything myself just to see if I am up for the challenge. Would prefer not to mail the frames just because they are priceless now....

With the freeze, I noticed barely anyone is selling their handgun parts.

I think my 9mm is un ramped. I'll check tomorrow, bit late here to strip 2 1911s to inspect.

I finally took my 1911s apart. 9mm and 45 ACP ( Right frame ). Only thing I noticed was on my 45, the feed ramp was deeper, and slightly longer. Obviously the ejectors are different between frames.

I think if you got a complete top end, and new ejector, you could probably make it work on the 45 frame. I just don't know if the slightly deeper and longer feed ramp would create a lip under the barrel for the round to snag.

Ramping was done to avoid unsupported chambers when using high-pressure cartridges like .45 Win Mag and 10mm Auto. There is no reason to go to a ramped barrel in 9mm, though of course some companies ramped all their 1911 pistols, such as Paraordnance.

So, the vast majority of barrels should be unramped, and you should have no problem building them onto your frame. The frame I bought at the freeze was a Norinco originally in 9mm, and I had no trouble building it up as a .45 ACP. In fact, I acquired a couple of barrels and the one that runs best is actually a Paraordnance barrel that I ground the ramp off of.

What retailers did you deal with, BattleRifle?

I got some springs and small parts from Brownell's, otherwise it all came from auctions, gun shows, and off the EE here, including the frame itself.

I can see that the going may be tough for you. I was (and continue to be) surprised at how little is changing hands in the parts market, for anything that is not Glock. And, for whatever reason, lots of people seem to be trying to build 1911s in 9mm, so there is lots of competition for what few parts are out there.

Wanstalls used to have a lot of 1911 stuff. I'll drop Matt a call and see if maybe he can help.

I have bought successfully from Brownells before but never a slide and barrel just small parts. Might as well start watching the EE as well.

Thanks for the tips BR

I know a few gunsmiths I can send the frame to but I would really like to try and do the fitup myself. A great learning experience.

Put a WTB, you never know what you are going to get. But be warned you're not gonna find them for cheap. A top end now will cost you as much as a full gun. Seeing how much people want for their Glock uppers.
