Rethreading a threaded barrel

do lots of this type of work, I will usually make a sleeve already threaded in this case 1/2 28, the center is reamed as 3/8, next turn the barrel under the sleeve diameter 0.002 to 0.003 and heat the sleeve, slip it on and done, it will align perfectly and avoids setting up the barrel twice

I agree that this method works very well for most industrial applications, however I don't mind setting up twice to insure it is as perfect as modern equipment can make it. With your method I can envision several potential problems for minor misalignment. I was taught that when over sleeving anything that one should start with an oversize OD sleeve and final machine to spec after sleeve has set and cooled.........may or may not be better, just makes sense to me.

I can promise that shrinking a sleeve onto a barrel will reduce bore diameter at that point. For this reason, I would not use a shrink fit on a barrel. I think it is better to thread and glue or solder the sleeve in place. In this case, I would increase the thread diameter on the barrel with a threaded sleeve and rethread the attachment to fit.

I completely agree with you Bill but this particular barrel has a recessed crown (The crown is recessed in the barrel about 1" and the threading extends about 5/8" past the shoulder) and would allow for a shrink fit... I still would prefer a finger push on fit and the appropriate Loctite.

I missed the recessed muzzle part. This because my brain often doesn't process what my eyes are seeing.
So, you are back working but golf on Wednesdays and Thurdays. I suppose you fish on Mondays and Tuesdays, try for a conjugal meet on Fridays, then rest up over the weekend? You may as well just retire!

LOL...

I only golf if the weather is good, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday ... Tuesday morning a coffee break with some shooters and Friday morning is a motorcycle coffee break... no more hunting and rarely fish now. May do more fresh water fishing ...
