I'd like to be educated on reticle's and adjustment turrets... I'm new to the long range shooting thing. I've read in a few threads in CGN about different types of adjustments on the turrets mil radian i think? and MOA? i recall people discussing why use both ie if you have a mil dot reticle don't use a MOA Adj turret? why is this? looking to learn a little more about optics and ranging with them here

Thanks MB

Your gonna have to do a bit of reading but the questions will be answered.

The angular units of the reticle features must match the angular units of the knobs' "click" values. There is no reason to have two different "systems" in use on the same scope. If the clicks are in MOA, the reticle features should be in MOA. If the reticle is in mils (e.g. Horus or Mil-dot), the knob clicks should be in mil units.

Thanks Radical. I was also curious about the focal plain. it is to my understanding that if you have a reticle of which you plan on measuring targets and ranging with it should be in the second focal plain making it zoom with your target.. is this correct?

No, but keep reading.

Second focal plane (SFP) = only one setting that the MILS or MOA adjustments would be correct for ranging (unless your a math freak and use some cool method for other magnifications). Example my falcon Menace 4.5-18X56 is only mil-radian accurate on 10X. Meaning I can mil out targets/range @ 10X but would not be accurate on any other setting. (Nightforce uses 15X setting for the 3.5-15X models and 22X for the rest of the NSX models.) Its nice because the reticle stays the same size.

First focal Plane FFP = Doesn't matter what magnification your on, the mils or MOA are always accurate. Only trade off is that the reticle shrinks and grows as you decrease or increase your magnification. FFP does help speed things up if your in a hurry to make a correction shot instead of having to go and turn your mag setting to a specific # setting (example used was 10X on my Menace) Falcon Menace also makes a nice FFP (which I will also own), the 4-14X44FFP. If your rich or you got the coin get a Schmidt & Bender or If you wanna wait a bit, Nightforce is comming out with a FFP line of scopes in the future (more reticle choices than S&B.) Doesn't matter cause I'd have to sell some organs to get one.. JK Hope this helps. Rob:)

Yeah it sure does help. I really want a NF for my LTR but i do like the FFP idea anything to help and speed things up is great. Also i like how strong the NF optics are. Feels like you could beat someone to death with that optic and it'll still hold zero. I think i'll be saving my pennies for an S&B though. Put that on my Sako Finnlight. Something about the S&B just intrigues me

Thanks Radical.. That sure was alot of reading.. and i think i had an aneurysm trying to learn all that and remember it....

No Prob, I know there seems to be alot of info @ first but were all here to learn, take your time and don't forget the most important thing is to have fun. Happy Shooting!
Rob:)
