Reticle

I will be picking up a Mueller 8.5-25x scope in the next week or so but cannot decide on a reticle, either mildot or illuminated dot reticle. I will be mounting this scope on an AR180B, and will be using it for target shooting and possibly some varminting. I am leaning towards the mil-dot as for the range estimation and the fact that you can tell how far over you are hitting. Suggestions Please?

P.S. Plz. post if you have had any good experience with these scopes, I am pretty much dead set on one and have read good stuff in previous posts, would just like to re-confirm.

Thanks.:dancingbanana:

I've had very good luck with the muellers, i'll buy more in the future for sure. Don't have that one tho.

Thanks for the opinion, btw I found a pretty good review of one of the Mueller Tacticals: http://w w w.snipercentral.com/muellertac.htm (Remove spaces between w's). The one thing I noticed in the review is that it brought to my attention that the 4-16x has 1/8" clicks, while the 8.5-25x has 1/4" clicks, would the 1/4" clicks be fine for .223 shooting out to 500yrds. or less? I would rather have 1/8" clicks, but if 1/4" will work then that will be fine.....

Well long range shooting at varmints is not my feild of expertise - i'm more interested in moose at 200 than gophers at 500. :)

At 500 yards the difference between the two is only just over half an inch per click. That doesn't sound to ME like it'd be enough of a difference to sweat - but maybe the guys who shoot that far would be able to tell you if it's a valuable feature or not. I'd expect to correct more with the gun than the scope, but like i say - not my expertise.

If it's at all possible, try and get a mil-scale reticle like the Leupold Tactical Milling Reticle. It's much more precise, easier to read and quicker.

What you need on a long range is 1/4 min adjustments I have a 1/8 min adjust on my Burris I can only get enough adjustment out to 400m .As far as the reticle goes it is a personal thing take a look at both and see what one you like

It is not the 1/8 or 1/4 click that is going to make the difference at 500yds it it the wind. I have a 1/8th and find it to be a pain in the ass, too much cranking.

Ok, thanks, so I guess the 1/4" will be fine, now I just need to decide on a reticle :) I know that I will be doing almost all of my shooting in the day, but the illuminated dot might be useful against darker targets, and it has a 50mm obj. v.s. a 44mm, but I think that the mildot would be handy for range estimation and correcting shots..... Choices, choices! ;)

besides - the illumination is VERY small. Even on my bigger-sized center dot 2-7 mueller, you can't see the illumination execept in very low light conditions (where it's an absolute joy to have admittedly, but who hunts gophers before the sun's up a bit?)

Probably better off with the non-illuminated if you like the reticle better. For fast action on deer and such, the red dot rocks but for just varmint hunting at long range, i doubt you'd see a major advantage.

Ok, thanks, I have finally made up my mind :) When I go to pick it up I will take a look at both once more to make sure. Thanks for the replies.:);)

Well, I picked up the Mueller Tactical today, and am very excited to try it out, the glass seems excellent and I really like the mildot reticle :D Now I just need to pick up some rings and get it mounted to make sure everything's good, will post a review in the near future! :p

I think you made the right choice. I've got that scope and find that the thicker reticle that is typical of mildot scopes is very easy to see in low light. Let us know how you like using it. :)

Well, I'm probably taking the rifle out this weekend so I will post a review of how it goes :) The only thing I do not like is the zero eye relief, but once I get the rifle and scope all set up for myself it shouldn't be much of a problem, especially just for target shooting and varminting.....

Ok, I took the rifle out and mounted the scope last weekend, and I really like it. Really clear optics and I really like the high magnification. The only problem is part way through sighting it in, I ran out of ammo! I will have to take it out again this coming weekend with some more ammunition so I can finish sighting it in and post some pics.....

ROFLMAO.

It's important to remember we're laughing WITH you, not at you.

Ok - i lied. we're laughing at you. :D :D :D

Good to hear the scope was doing well tho - can you compare it to other scopes you've used that are similar, like "better than my old burris" or "almost but not quite as clear as my ###"? Give us a feel for where it sits quality wise?

Black Bear:

I don't know about your 180B. I best I could get with mine was 2 MOA with handloads. It doesn't matter how good the scope is or what reticle you have it wouldn't make much of a difference. 180B is cool but is not an accurate target rifle. At best you can use it is plinking up to 200 yards tops.

I had a Tesco 6-24 mill dot scope on the 180B, which I now use for load development. The 180B has been traded for a Tikka HB Varmint that shoots better than ¾ MOA.

I don’t mean to be harsh. Rather I want to share my experience with you.
