Well I'm getting a Leupold Mk4 M1, and I've decided on the TMR, but I'm wondering if it's a better idea (and possibly cheaper?) to get a duplex reticle and get a reticle installed afterward?

I'd just save the money now and get the reticle you want to have rather than going the other route. You'll find that you're going to have a hard time getting the reticle swap done. Premier Reticles no longer does work on Leupolds and if you end up with one of the Mark4 line of scopes - you'll have to send it across the line (to Leupold) to get the reticle change done (all retrofitting options will probably involve lots of paperwork and extra money in the long run)... Just my $.02.

hsld.

Thanks guys.
Well I was referring to a more "customized" kind of mil-scale range-finding reticle, like the TMR but more useful (if there is such a thing). Would it be smarter to just go with the TMR?
Also, what's with people not working on and not servicing Mk4's anymore?

Rohann,
Just get the TMR and be done with it, avoid the pain in the ass of sending it and having a new reticle installed. Korth Agencies have never had the capability to service the Long Range/Mark 4 line of scopes. I have contacted them on numerous occasions hoping that would change but no luck. I was recently in the Portland Oregon area and had a tour of the Leupold facility. The guy who gave me the tour said as far as he knew, Korth could service the scopes. When I got back I called Korth, they said they could not because Leupold has not provided them with the equipment/means to service the scopes. Maybe it's as simple as a phone call to sort it out but who knows.

Well I've messed around a bit with theoretical rangings and readings and such and the TMR seems to work pretty quickly and efficiently (much more so than the Mil-Dot). I was just curious as to whether it was worth it, but it definately sounds like it (and it sounds like it's a huge pain to get a scope across the border).

EC: Oh, so it has to do with capability? I thought most places just chose not to service them; thanks for the info.

Longshot: Definately need practice, but will be getting plenty of that when the rifle's set up. Just don't want to buy something I'll end up regretting.

Just for reference sake and those who havent seen this pic before here is a pic through my Leupold with TMR at a target 1000yrds away.

I love that pic it is my wall paper some times Knorth told me it would be 260.00 to change my duplex retical to the TMR. I already paid 160.00 for the target turets so the TMR will have to wait a while.:( Besides I need a bi pod

My old shooting partner who took the pic would be flattered that you use it as a wall paper, I've tried to duplicate the shot a couple of times on different targets, but i have a cheap digital camera and less skill with it. I always black out a lot of the scope picture. :(

I used the TMR reticle in a spotting scope in march at the McMillian Memorial Sniper Match and scored a 95% /100 on UKD passive means ranging exercise. It makes a hell of a difference. We had to find and range 5, 15 inch IPSC targets that were painted to blend in with the desert in an area about 1.5 Km wide at the widest and 1 Km deep.We found them all.You had to be within 10m on your range otherwise you were docked 5% for every 10 m you were over or under. The TMR works very well.
