I want to get started training my lab for ducks / geese and I'm looking for opinions. Mike Lardy or Bill Hillmann, both seem excellent. Has anybody used either one and what are your thoughts?

Where are you located? Your best option is to join a local retriever club. You will get far more out of a club and the help from a group training scenario than you will any book or DVD series alone. That being said, books are nice to fall back on when you encounter hiccups in training. Mike Lardy is THE man in the field trial game, so his stuff should be good, but there's a tonne of good options out there.

can someone recommend a trainer/club in the Toronto area? I would like to get out in the fields/water to train with my pup but it's a bit hard to do in the city (never mind actually finding farm raised birds to get him to work with)
I have taken him to the trap/skeet fields to get used to the shotgun and he has no problems with that.
Sorry for the thread hijack!

Just google "retriever training clubs Toronto" I'm sure something will pop up.

ya, I have actually sent a few emails to different clubs asking for some info. I was just curious if someone local had any experience or a group/trainer to recommend.

Aren't you glad I led you to Jimmy and Chuck when you were starting out with Reed? Training with guys with that much experience pays huge dividends. I have always said there is more to training the handler than the dog. Based on how Reed performs I'd say you learned well!! It's always a pleasure watching the two of you in action!!

Best move I ever made!

Same here, best thing I did when I was young like you was join that retriever club. I had no idea how to work a dog. I never picked up on it like you did but then those guys and I all started at the same time so experience levels were not what they are now. You have picked up on it very well. You are much more intuitive than I was.

Nothing like training your own dog and then seeing the results when hunting over it. Joining a club or a group of experienced fellas with there dogs for training sessions is extremely valuable to you and the dog. First you must be trained then the dog. I trained 3 over the years, all labs. I ran one at the Hunting Show in Toronto for a couple years. A very rewarding undertaking if you learn to accept dogs have individual characteristic's like humans and you have to work with the positive and around the negative. First rule of dog training is understanding, and being smarter than the dog.
