Choosing an optic for your AR15 can be confusing, especially for on a budget build. I mainly use my AR for CQB matches. I can’t justify buying a thousand dollars scope for plinking at paper. I have shot three sessions of matches using Aimpoint PRO/Eotech EXPS 2-0. I want to try something different this year. I recently purchased a Bushnell AR Optic 1x4 24 mm with Throw-Down PCL and illuminated BTR reticle. Mounted on an ADA Recon together is still under $400.
Here is a quick review of Bushnell AR Optic 1x4. The testing AR is a 10.3 DD barrel with carbine length gas and Rainier Arms mini comp. The AR is a single stage mil-spec trigger. I was shooting 55gr FMJ Norinco ammo. The optic was sighted using a M16A4/M4 25 meter zeroing target at distance of 50 yards. I know it is off by approximately 3 meters but it was the distance that I had to work with. Here is the link for the target in pdf. : http://www.eotech-inc.com/documents/M16A4-M4MWS_EOTech_Live_Fire_Target.pdf
The temperature was -15’c with strong wind downrange and snow covered. I was shooting from kneeing down and rifle supported by a table no sandbag during testing. The scope is 0.1 mil per click so it works out approximately 4 clinks to move 1 cm using the target above.
It took me 6 shots to zero the scope which I was surprised. I bore sighted it at home and shot it for the first time. The first two shots were on target. It could have been operator error due to the cold (LOL, it was freezing!!) One round impacted approximately 8 clicks to the left and the next was on the opposite by slightly lower, too. The next 2 shots hit center but was little lower than my point of aim. I’ve adjusted it and able to achieve double tap at the point of aim.
Here is my conclusion on Bushnell AR Optic:
1. The reticule is not daytime visible even on the highest setting. Unlike Aimpoint/Eotech, I can’t see the illumination but the reticule is clear. The reticule gets wash out as soon as I aim it at the snow or the white paper target. It was ok on fig. 11.
2. It is easy to adjust. The turret is not capture but each click is easy to and tactile. It does not have a return to zero function like the Vortex PST or other optic. I guess it is a trade off with a budget scope.
3. The eye relief is something I have to get used to. Given that majority of my experience are with Aimpoint/Eotech. You really need to stay behind the glass with good cheek weld. I can see it being slightly slower in CQB matches than Aimpoint/Eotech. The trade-off is a tighter grouping.
Clearance for rear flip-sight
I will give more update after the first CQB match in April using this scope. Thanks for reading and please feel free to give me your input. I’m a newbie that like to learn more on optics and precision shooting.
