Quality control has improved vastly since the days when Remington took over Marlin. The new models I'm familiar with were excellent in fit, finish and function. Don't listen to the naysayers. I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.

I have a Marlin 336C chambered in 35 Remington in 2017...fit and finish are great and has always fired when I pull the trigger. When I do my part she is dead on out to 100 yds. I replaced the Buckhorn sights with Skinner Sights....my favourite whitetail deer rifle.

I did not replace the front sight but others I know did replace the front sight...I am sure that everyones eyesight is different...in my case I did not need to replace with a taller sight
If I was in the market for a new lever gun in 30-30 and I wanted something Marlin like, I’d have a very serious look at Henry now that they are offering side loading models. They’re a lot like a Marlin, but the fit and finish is much nicer. The Henry’s are more expensive, but the Marlins need trigger work and action smoothing, and that costs money and time. Why not skip all of that and just get a Henry?
I put a 2018 336ss in my safe recently and it is a vast improvement over my prior remlins, other than the trigger
I bought a 45/70 GBL a few years ago. Made by Remington. Fit and finish and quality control is horrific.
