Not sure about the new ones but the older 96D in 40 cal had the slide cracking issues.

90two was re-designed for .40cal.

Why not get a 9mm? better for a beginner- less recoil and cheaper ammo. I have a 92FS Inox and love it.

The 9mm Beretta is a fine weapon, it has a very heavy trigger pull however. You can change the mainspring for a reduced power spring from the D model to drop the double action pull from around 12 pounds to 8 pounds. Single action will remain at about 5 pounds.
The .40 cal Beretta 96 suffered from slide cracking, resulting in the Brigadier model with a heavier slide. This has a removable front sight as well, allowing you to change out for night sights or a fibre optic front sight. The brigadier also came in 9mm.

The 90-Two is the new polymer gripped version of the 92/96, with the removable sights of the Brigadier.

Basically they are a fine, reliable firearm. If you want to compete in IPSC they are not the best option, but Slavex (a moderator on this forum) managed to make the Canadian team while shooting one.
Beretta also make a .22 conversion called the practice kit for cheap training, I have one and find it very reliable.

I have a Beretta M9 , Its a great gun, its my second Beretta. can't go wrong with the 92 fS 9MM.

Mine has a D spring in it, and I have to say it's not bad at all. At my BB course I tried CZ shadow back to back with my 92FS and Beretta's trigger was actually a little nicer in DA. My 75B came with a VERY heavy trigger but after I swapped the mainspring with a 13lbs one it's even nicer than Beretta's. But than again I'm sure D spring is more than 13lbs, so it's not a 100% fair comparison. You can get a competition mainspring for 92 that will reduce the trigger pull even more.
