I am kind of thinking my next buy will be a revolver. Right now I'm looking at the following...

1. a Alfa proj .357 4.5" BNIB for $475 shipped

2. an older S&W 586 (it's a no dash so 1981-ish?) 6" barrel.... some use marks/some bluing wear at the muzzle...... $600 shipped (it's had the recall done)

3. What looks like a more recent Rugar GP100 also 6" this one is SS with wood grips. ad says 500 rounds..... $600 shipped

Comments? use would be as a general range gun...plinking/steel/paper targets at 15-25 yards etc etc

I'm also in the market for a 22 revolver

There are some BNIB alloy 4.5" Alfa's on the EE for $375 shipped or a local gun store has a nice looking Taurus 96 (blued 6" wood grips) for 399+HST ( It appears to be a copy of a S&W 617 but I'm told the internals are different)

Thoughts?.....anybody own any of these guns?

I bought the gp100 6" for my wife because she just had to have a revolver. She shoots . 38 mostly and for not being a "serious" shooter, she is a darn good shot with it. I throughly enjoy shooting it as well. The quality is top notch for the price. I bought mine used and I have to say the double action pull feels smoother than my sig 227

For some obscure reason I really enjoy centrefire revolvers. But hefting a restricted barrel length k frame in a rimfire caliber, I feel a tad bit ripped off as I feel it's much better suited for something in a bigger caliber. This coming from a guy that owns an n frame S&W Heavy Duty in 38 Special too. ;)

I'm with sailor in this regard. Too much money that could be better spent on a good Ruger Mk I/II/III, with cash left over for spare mags and ammunition.

Never seen, let alone own an Alfa Project but there are a few current threads here about how things have gone wrong with them. IMO, this decision is only between the Ruger and the Smith since they both cost the same. I've shot both and used to own the 586 6inch barrel. To each their own but I'll take the S&W any time.

My vote is for S&W every time. Less likely to have issues. And as for folks not wanting to spend much on a .22, why not? It costs just as much to make a rim fire revolver as a center fire. Get a good one and don't look back.

I vote the Ruger GP100. A work horse and a heavy one at that. I've had the 4.2 and the 6 and a no dash no lock S&W 686. Refinement on the Smith was nice but I just couldn't compare the Ruger to the 686. Smith sold quickly.

They are both fine revolvers. Personal preference. I like simple.

I have both the Smith 686 and 617 and quality is there. The 617 may be expensive for a .22 but it shoots lie a dream and you know you will never wear out a gun like that. From my experience: quality is more expensive but on the long run you save as you will not re-sell to buy better.

686. The 586 is more dirty harry but cleaning stainless is easier.

Be sure you can afford the cost of 38/357. Way more expensive than 22lr for 617.

My reload cost for my cast 357 is same as 22lr. No point in any non collector firearm if you can't afford to send the lead downrange.

Find an old Model 17. Six shots like my 586, beautiful gun and accurate as all hell. You will not regret this one. I scooped one off the EE for $550 and never looked back.

Thanks all..... Offer accepted and funds sent on the Smith 586 no dash. The 22 is still under consideration......Hey, maybe a SA Pietta?

A model 17 (top revolver) would make a perfect trainer match for your 586.
