Picked up a Ruger Blackhawk in .44mag. Its great, no regrets at all in buying it which is good because I'm stuck with it!
Only problem, I have unusually large hands and the grip frame seems built for normal size hands. Being a .44 mag, it bucks! Just wondering if someone can point me in the direction of a set of larger grips to fill my mitt better? Also I read something about possibly being able to replace the grip frame with a larger one, how does that hole "buying gun parts" thing work in a post hand gun freeze world??
TIA

I assume you have a 4.625" or 5.5"? You can get larger grips from Hogue and Pachmayr. I prefer the frame swap but it is definitely more expensive and time consuming. I put the larger SBH Hunter grip frame on my 4.625" instead of the Dragoon style on the standard 7.5" and 10.5" models.

You'll have to contact a distributor like the Korth Group to order
SBH Hunter Grip Frame: KHR00300, and
SBH Hunter Grip panels: 70095.

The grip frame can't be shipped direct from the US. Jason in Ottawa did my conversion and did an amazing job.

Its the 7.5. Does that mean it has the larger grip frame on it already?

Yes. Only the 2 short barrelled SBHs have the regular BH frame. The 7.5 and 10.5 already have the larger sized Dragoon or Hunter frame.

You'll want the Hogues or Pachmayrs, which add volume and length to the larger frame.

Beautiful. Thanks!

Lol.

If the whole handgun liberty thing sorts itself out, look for a Ruger SA with a Bisley grip. The traditional "plow handle" is only intended for a two finger grip, the pinky being under the front tow of the grip to mitigate the "roll" from recoil. This was fine when 40 grains of black powder was a stout load, as you've experienced, with our modern magnums...not so much fine. The Bisley is a full handed grip and closer to 90 degrees vertical. It was initially introduced for target shooting single actions, but works wonderfully well for Rem Mag cartridges.

The Hogue grips are the solution for your gun.

No. Try herretts grips, theyre great but not cheap. If you seriously want a larger grip frame, you can buy a Bisley frame for your Blackhawk and swap them out. Or some hogues as suggested. That would be the most cost effective change. - dan

Ok, I've learned a few things and I think I've got myself sorted.
I found a really good diagram on the rugar forum that had the 3 different styles of grip frames with measurements, Id share that here but I cant seem to find it back atm.
The super blackhawk grip frame is almost as big as you can go anyways. I'm going to get myself a Hogue monogrip with the finger groves. I think this will at the very least improve the feel for me, and considering I'm probably only going to take it a few times a year, its a good start. If I decide its still not right feel then I'll decide quickly before they completely ban fun, freedom, and the sale of parts and track down the Bisley grip frame. I did some reading and the comments seem to suggest its a good upgrade for people with big mitts like me, but also by the time I saw it all put together probably be more than another $300 in parts and shipping ECT.
Thanks for all the info! I'll update in the new year.

The Hogues are good place to start and not expensive.

I'm in the minority but I prefer the plow handle over the Bisley. I like how it rolls back in the hand. I prefer the larger plow handle frame, like the Ruger Hunter or the Freedom Arms 83, but even the smaller frame is easier on the hand than e.g., my short barrel 629.

Up to 44 Magnum/45 Win Mag levels, the plough handle works fine for me too. Over that the Bisley just makes it (slightly) easier to shoot. - dan

There's something to think about with this statement. I think part of what makes me want a bigger grip is my other pistol is a full frame 1911, which as far as recoil goes is a totally different machine. So it could be that I just need to spend more time shooting with the revolvers plow handle design and learn how to manage the recoil properly. Definitely going to source a Hogue, but also going to practice lots.

Hogue ships direct as well. I have also lucked out on Hogue and Pachmayr grips on amazon from time to time.

needs a space between
that would be expected. I've tried 9 different ways. Going to customer support I guess!
Just got off the phone with them, they're "unable to ship to Canada at this time". Wished I asked why, but I can guess. They sent me to 4th Gen Tactical and said I should be able to order from them.

Weird. Mine registered but maybe because I have a pre-existing account.
That is unfortunate about the shipping at this time…
