Revolver Question

I came across a box of .38 rounds. My question is: Can I shoot them through my S&W .357 686? I know I can use .38 special rounds but am not sure about the .38.

.38 Special is compatible (1/8" shorter) with .357.

.38 S&W is shorter still and I dont know if its compatible at all.

It will fit and they will fire. The bullets are oversize but soft (and might leave behind some lead).

If they are .38 Special they will chamber & fire no problem. If they are .38 S&W rounds/ammo they may not chamber at all.
