just bought a used 686 (1st revolver) and have a couple questions about it...

Im not sure how many rounds through it but there was a lot of caked on carbon on the cylinder that I had to use steel whool to get off...

The barrel is clean and shiny but the rifling is not as pronounced as I am used to, compared to regular auto pistols its like half as high..is this normal or is it worn?

Also if I shake the gun i hear a little rattle inside, do all 686's have this?

Revolver Rifling

S&W revolvers have extremely good barrels. Probably the best there are. Best way to tell what you got is too shoot it. That will tell the story in a hurry. If the rifling is not that produced and sharp that is a result of wear but it could also be a cleaning issue.

The inside rattle worries me. Something is not right there. Disassemble and clean is what I suggest.

I love my 686. Why? Because it is a damn accurate gun, and has one of the best trigger pulls anyone can ask for.

The rifling is visible but its weird, I need to see what a new 686 looks like...I took it apart, as far as removing the hammer but the part inside thats rattling is not visible even then...I dont know what it is.

The rattling might be the transfer bar safety is so equipped. I own a Taurus and it rattles a bit when I shake it. The carbon/lead build up is normal. I'm going to be at St. Jacques on Sunday and you could take a look at my Taurus rifling if it would be any help.
