I am waiting for my RPAL and still trying to decide on what type of gun to buy. I have been to the local Service Pistol club and most folks are shooting 9mm semi auto's. I would like to know what the advantages and disadvantages between shooting a revolver or semi auto and vice versa. I would like to eventually get into IPSC, IDPA style shooting and reloading. Can a revolver be used competitively in these shooting styles. One thing I noticed with the semi's is picking up the brass. One gentleman made a very good point that most at the club shoot revolvers during the winter months because it's hard to find the brass in the snow. At least with a revolver you can control where your spent casing go. Also I noticed that extra mags for the semi's can be pricey. So to all those shooters out there any pros or cons to owning a revolver vs a semi. I owed a S&W 586 20 some years ago and although I dind't get the opportunity to shoot it much do to work it seemed sufficient at the time. Cheers. Troy

Considering that revolvers do not compete in the same classes as semi's, the question becomes, which suits you more?

Revolvers can be comparible to many semi's IF you practice a lot.
Look up Jerry Miculek if you want to see what training and experience can do with a revolver in competition.

I shoot both a semi and a revolver, and I find the revolver way more fun to shoot.

I shot IPSC for 10 years before I seen the light and moved to another discipline. During that 10 year period the most fun I had was the season that I competed with a S&W M66 for the entire year. The revolver guys have less attitude, more willingness to help out new shooters and basically have more fun cause the know they are not there to "win at any cost".

With practice you will enjoy your time with a revolver.

I shoot a semi and revolver in ipsc, i had the revolver sitting in the cab so figured I might as well use it. Semi is fun and fast, revolver takes a little more thinking and time but is great fun. I use a 586 currently and can tell you reloads are slow compared to those who are using guns machined for moon clips. A S&W 610 would be my ideal choice.

most folks in ipsc shoot semi automatic pistols and a only a few folks shoot revolver. Usually a stage is designed to be challenging for the semi auto shooter with little consideration to the guy having only 6 rounds on tap.

Often you would see an array of 4 or 5 targets together which could be engaged without a reload. The revolver guy would often have to do a standing reload in order to engage the same targets.

However at the end of the day the revolver shooter's scores are only compared to other revolvers, so they all face the same challenges. If you like one than get it, you can have a lot of fun in IPSC with a revolver.
