RFB/Semi vs Superformance/Light Mag Ammo

i wouldn't recommend it. i do believe on the box for the light mags and superformance it says for bolt actions only.

some loads are just to strong for a semi and really pound the snot out of an action. bolts are different, they dont move until you want them to.

Yes, it has a warning on the box, they are actually fairly stout loads.

No need to be taking chances.Fixed actions I believe is how they worded it on the older light magnum packaging.

From the Hornady website:

Light Magnum® - Heavy Magnum®

With the advent of Superformance™ Ammunition, Light Magnum® and Heavy Magnum® Ammunition is being discontinued.

“Superformance ammunition provides all the positives of Light and Heavy Magnum (increased velocity without increased barrel wear), but has added benefits as well. Simply stated; Superformance provides 100 to 200 feet per second faster muzzle velocities than any conventional ammunition; there’s no increase in felt recoil; no sacrifice in accuracy, and it gives up far less velocity when shot from shorter barreled rifles. Superformance is also friendly for use in all guns, including semi-autos, unlike Light and Heavy Magnum that had a pressure curve that wasn’t conducive for use in semi-autos.” – Jason Hornady, Vice President/Director of Sales.

Originally developed and pioneered by Hornady in the early 1990’s, both Light Magnum® and Heavy Magnum® ammunition set the original standard for increased performance by providing higher velocity and energy from existing cartridges through a proprietary propellant and loading process. As revolutionary as this product was, it has now simply been eclipsed. Superformance™ ammunition is a 21st Century shift in ammunition technology. There’s no gimmicks, no compromises, only benefits. It’s faster (100 to 200 fps faster than any conventional ammunition on the market), extremely accurate, and there’s NO increase in felt recoil (unlike Light Magnum® and Heavy Magnum®).

I picked up a bunch of super performance stuff in 5.56 75gr bthp. Its listed at 2920 fps while my 75gr hornady tap is running at 2720 with the same bullet. There's some extensive testing threads on arfcom where it does chrono that much higher than TAP, but is less accurate.

I have yet to run it through my tavor.

How does it push a bullet 200 fps faster without increasing the recoil?

From Hornady:

The NEW standard by which all ammunition will be judged.

Fast

Superformance ammunition is 100 to 200 fps FASTER than any conventional ammunition on the market today, and achieves this performance in EVERY gun, WITHOUT increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.
Innovative

Superformance is a cutting edge technological advancement in ammunition design that transcends convention and achieves the highest performance of any ammunition on the market today.
Specialized

Superformance uses ultra progressive propellants that take your favorite SST or GMX bullets to levels of performance that are simply unattainable with conventional propellants. In order to get more velocity in the past – shooters have used a brute force approach – large charge weights of a slow burning powder in a larger cartridge case. Ultimately this leads to more recoil and muzzle blast. The Superformance solution is an elegant approach that utilizes specialized powders…at NORMAL charge weights, that impart ALL useable energy to the bullet reducing the ROCKET NOZZLE EFFECT at the muzzle while still increasing velocity!
Versatile

Superformance provides increased performance, and is safe to use in ALL firearms, including semi-autos*, lever gun and pump actions.
Increases in rifle performance, no increases in barrel wear and felt recoil, along with superior temperature stability are all realized with Superformance ammunition.
It really IS… Rocket Science!
Performance, Recoil & Comparison Tests

Superformance ammunition achieves 100 -200 fps over SAAMI standard in all calibers, all bullet weights and all bullet types. This performance is achieved by revolutionary new, extremely efficient powders optimized for each load. DOWNLOAD FULL ARTICLE…

*Superformance in Gas Operated Firearms

Superformance ammunition is safely within SAAMI pressure guidelines. Gas operated firearms are perfectly safe to use with Superformance ammunition. However, we have conducted tests and conclude that some systems work far better than others. READ MORE…
