Just wanted to let anyone thinking about taking a course on precision shooting to know that Rob Furlong is a great way to go.

I took the beginner course this past weekend in Rocky Mountain House and had the time of my life. Best course I have ever had the pleasure of taking.

Went with a buddy of mine and neither of us had shot a scoped rifle before this weekend. I have not spent more than 20 rounds behind a rifle in my life but have a great deal of pistol time. My buddy had spent a lot of time shooting in the 80's with the military but hade only done open sight shooting. We both decided that it was time to take a look at getting into the long range shooting game. I found RFMA in January and me and my buddy decided to sign up for the course this past weekend. We were not sure what to expect and were kind of reluctant to give it a try.

I can assure you that if you are thinking about taking a course on precision shooting that RFMA is the place you want to go. The whole experience was incredible and way beyond our expectations. The group that we took the course with was amazing and will be a great memory for many years to come. Rob and Miles are consummate professionals and very good at what they do. We had every thing from a 14 year old to a 65 year old in the class and they took the time to make sure that everyone understood what they were saying. They also turned me from a complete hack into a confident beginner capable of hitting a gong at 500m 3 times in 5 seconds. I'm not sure what everyone else will think about that but for me it was a great feat having never shot a scoped rifle just 2 days before... If they can do that for me then I would hate to see what they could do for someone with experience.

I rented a full package for the course for $300.00 and that included a brand new PGW Coyote, Leopold Mk4 scope, Leopold Mil scope, mat, ear protection etc. Literally everything that you need. First class gear in every sense of the word. I can only hope to buy gear of such a high quality myself. They also spent a lot of time talking about what good gear is. I realize that everyone has an opinion but I will take the opinion of 2 of the best snipers in the world over many others in a heart beat. They have credibility beyond comparison and anyone that spends 3 days with Rob and Miles will know that with out doubt. Humility is the finest quality in people that are truly great at what they do and there are none more humble than they... The level of patience that they can show while teaching is nothing short of amazing and both are very good at helping a layman understand complex things.

I wanted to see if I would like precision shooting and this course was my way. I have no doubt that I will invest in this to the fullest of my capabilities from here on in. Rob and Miles are responsible for creating a monster, as my wife said...

No second thoughts, want to learn how to shoot give Rob Furlong a call. Best investment you can make in precision shooting.

Cheers and thanks Rob and Miles for starting me out on the right foot...

Rocky Range is 600m at this time. Heard that they are going to 1400m but are waiting for CFO approval.

Hope that comes but for now 600m is what they have.

One further thought, anyone from Calgary that is looking for a range. Rocky is 2.5 hrs. away and you will not find a better range anywhere. First class facility in every sense of the word. The executive of the club took time out there busy schedule to come and provide gunsmith services for us on Saturday night so we could all enjoy the course. That place is clean, well laid out and very well maintained.

I will be getting a membership, if they will allow it, being from outside of Clearwater County. They only offer so many...

Come to Alberta.

Ontario is really nice but Alberta is where it's at...

We may have red necks but we wear blue ties...

Interesting. I've contemplating this, and now I suppose I will have to. To not go with it so close to home would be unforgivable.

I briefly dropped by, not realising the course was on, was very impressed with what I saw and heard from both the instructors and the students!

The range at rocky has a 600m rifle range, a separate 1200m rifle range that should be open shortly. The plan is for the 1200m range to be extended to 1600m in Apr-May 2015. There is an archery range, many pistol bays. I know there is 3 gun, and Cowboy Action there too. They also have shotgun range too, but I don't know details about that yet (meaning I don't know if they have skeet, trap or sporting clays, but there is some sort of clay launcher). I'm sure I'm missing some descriptions of what is available too!

Most of the facilities are awaiting some minor corrections before all being opened, but A and C are open now: A is the 600m rifle, C is a 25m pistol bay (well a bit bigger than a bay really!).

Not to high jack this thread but does any one know of any long range ranges near Edmonton will be working there for a few months and was wondering if I could some shooting on my days off,

Thanks Darin

Not taking anything from Rob, but for us Ontario shooters we have the MilCun training facility near Minden that is first class. Keith and Linda KNOW their stuff and have some great courses that will test the beginner or the more experienced as well.

This isn't what I wanted to hear... I wanted to take the course before... now I REALLY want to take it... just gets pricey with travel from BC plus hotel and food plus the course and 200 rounds of match ammo (would have to downsize to a more reasonable rifle I think for the course, maybe 308 or even more cost effective a 223)

Oh well, time to save the nickles

AFAIK, not without a membership or member present.

Sherwood Park Fish and Game is members only, strict no guest rule
Genesee range only goes out to 300, plans to open the 600 again but for now I believe it's closed. You need a member present to go.
Spruce Grove only goes out to 300, and i'm not sure on their guest drop in rules.

I spoke with Mr. Furlong a few time ( facebook friend ) and I am trying to bring him and his courses out here in the East. Was thinking Connaught or Valcartier ranges.

He is really open to the idea but I have to come up with a minimum group. Comfirmed people Anyone here interested? We could set up something in the fall. I already have a few MIL interested.

This forum could be a good place to start something!

Cheers.

Looks like i'll have to save up my pennies to do this course in the next year or 2 now :) Sounds like an excellent learning opportunity

pennies won't make it happen... you won't be getting any more since they've been pulled from circulation... nickles are where it's at. If the wife isn't too keen on tracking spending you might be able to squirrel away the odd dime or quarter as well

Edson Fish and Game is supposed to be open to 1600m July 1st. There is a thread on here called "The Longest Mile". They wont have a road out to the targets, so they suggest bringing quads, but the CFO inspection is done. They are currently looking for some steel sponsors and such. Lifetime memberships are only $1000. I think I am going to try to swing a deal with their steel supplier and buy $1000 dollar worth of steel targets in exchange for a lifetime. Help out both ways!! That's close to Edmonton.

PM me when you're around Edmonton with some free time during the week and I'll take you to Genesee as a guest (offer open to anyone).
I don't shoot on weekends because of the crowds and GiJoe wannabe's.

The plan is to have the 600yds open later this summer but the local CFO is being a pain in the a $$. Hopefully they get it sorted out soon. Once that is done there are plans to build out close to 1000yds as money permits. For now we have 100, 200, and 300yds.

There will be no further development on the long range this year at Genesse due to budget limitations. It has nothing to do with the CFO. It has to do with the amount of work required to replace the existing shooting positions, and all the dirt work required. There is several hundred thousand dollars of work to be done.

Sorry for the thread hijack.
