Rheinmetall Steyr RS556

Heard on a Larry Vickers Q&A just yesterday that Rheinmetall withdrew this rifle from the competition.

And of course the ongoing rumor has been that the G36 replacement program was always just an excuse to give HK another contract.

The irony is that the left wing German (Spiegel)media did this thinking they were sabotaging the Bundeswehr, but in fact they gave the excuse for the 416 which makes more sense than the G36 for compatibility reasons alone with US and other western nations. Its a shame the G36 is going but 416 is just everything you want in durability and gun fighter requirements.

G36 as far as performance goes set new standards that so many companies emulated after 911 with push for new designs in small arms development.

This wouldn't even be in the competition if it wasn't for Rheinmetall. Steyr has no manufacturing capability to fulfill the contract if they win.

What? I thought they wrapped up the austrian contract and was looking for a new contract to fill their lines?
