Hey everybody,

other than for work purposes I have never owned a firearm before a couple of months ago. Unfortunately for my first purchase I fell into the Rhineland Arms R22 fiasco like many of you. I have yet to try the Steel-lips, but that is my next purchase. Can anyone reccommend what type of ammo works best in these guns, I have tried the Federal Gold Medal but there was a whole bunch of fail to fires, with the occasional stovepipe.:(
I have pulled mine apart and cleaned it and lubed it and it seems to run a little smoother so I am hoping between that, the steel-lips and some good ammo I can get it running. Thanks. :)

An r22 as your first rifle.... ohhhh brother, I pity you:(

try the search function for "rhineland r22", and do alot of reading.... this thread will also help.

Not one of my better decisions, but hey, what can ya do...I am going to pick up a steel-lips mag and some cci mini mags on monday and try it at the range. hopefully this helps the situation, but after reading the posts on this site I am a little worried. Thank goodness for my 870, I can always depend on it...:D

I love mine. With Steel Lips mags and Federal #710 or 745 ammo, it runs like a scalded cat.

If you must go with other ammo, stick with high velocity round nosed, preferably copper plated bullets. Low velocity and blunt profile will kill it dead.

Well I am back from the range and NO luck. I tried a used and new steel-lips and three different types of ammo (CCI Longs, and 2 types of federal). I Don't think there is a problem with feeding its just the fail to fires. The one round that did go off I could see the difference in where the firing pin struck the casing compared with the rest.
Now I am on to plan "B" I spoke to the good people at Hunters in Surrey and they are going to try and get it to run.
I will report the results of that when it happens.

Mine runs great! It needs high velocity ammo and something with a round nose.. it can be hollow point like some federals I use. but it cannot be a huge hole like the winchest experts.. I have tried plastic lip and steel lip mags, both work fine.. but still with butler creek.. I tried some other brand mags and did not have such good luck.. I would say mine will have about one failure every two magazines.. no worse than my krinker.. and this is alot more accurate...

Send It Back

I did! Instead of screwing around with the R22, contact JR, send it back and let their gunsmith work to fix it. If he can't, you'll get your money back. Don't know about the rest of you guys, but a dozen visits to the range, switching out ejectors, bolts, turning barrels isn't my idea of a good time at the range.

I couldn't get mine to work no matter what. It was a jam-o-mania gun.

What he said.... we'll look after you.

I sure commiserate with all you guys who fell for a "Rhinelander". Anyway that's what my wife always says (after 32 years at that!). Being one myself and still working great after 73 years, all I can say that not all 'Rheinlanders' were made from the same mold. Watch that rigger squeeze. And good shooting.

Personally, even if RA comes through with new parts, any gun that is this picky about ammo especially a rimfire is a lemon. You guys are defintiely getting the shaft from all directions on this one.

I've never found a semi auto .22lr that wasn't a bit picky about ammo.

Canuck223,
Really? I have 2 10/22's and never have an issue with ammo. They like most. The only thing I have some issues with are Remington Yellow jackets with their truncated bullets. They feed, but not all the time. haven't tried shotshell and don't ever intend to. Complete waste of time and money if you ask me. Both guns are stock, with the exception of synthetic stocks. I've also got an old school Laekfield(now savage) 64B that's seen well over 45,000 rounds with little in the way of issues. It does need to be cleaned every 700-1000 rounds. It gets cleaned after every outing anyway. Broke the charge handle on it once, and replaced the firing pin, both for free from the manufacturer.

And isn't that what I said?

FWIW, on my R22, I get 100% reliability with Federal #710 and 745. Federal Champion #510 may see a jam every 100-200 rounds. It won't feed the wide mouthed Winchester Expert hollowpoints. It won't feed the Velocitor ammo. The Aquila 38gr copper plated hollowpoints varied so much in velocity I doubt they'd feed in anything other than a bolt gun.

My old 64B would jam every 2-3 mags with almost every type of ammo I tried, clean or dirty. My last two 10/22's were pretty good, but I could count on a jam every few mags.

FWIW, I've got 8 steel lips mags, and tend to fire from 2-500 rounds a week. Once i found ammo that it liked, it's been gravey.

As for cleaning, I run a boresnake down it every time I come home with it. Other than that, I've only taken the bolt out once and the upper doesn't get dirty very fast.

Wow, that's how you clean your guns? No offence but if you don't clean it, don't blame it for not working. If the gun is clean and fails, the gun is to blame. If the gun is dirty and fails, its the owners fault.

Um, the gun is cleaned every time it's used:confused: The open area behind the chamber is easy to wipe clean, and beyond that it doesn't get dirty.
