Hi Folks,

Just received an RIA/Armscor M22 in the mail today and have some pics/thoughts compared to the 10/22. I am just getting into this hobby so please forgive me if I do not use all the correct terminology.

1) The wood stock on the M22 looks terrible (see pics). Ruger has nothing to worry about if they're concerned someone is copying their stock as it's pretty apparent which is which

2) The scope rail is removable (There is another thread regarding the G36 stock and whether the rail would interfere with installation). One thing to note is that the screws which hold in the rail are of a coarser thread than on the Ruger (see pic).

3) Rear sight is ugly and does not contain fiber optics (although the front sight does). If you see the pic, the vertical piece that the rear sight fits on was bent to the right (when looking down range). I have no clue how to adjust the elevation but assume it has to do with the stepping along that vertical piece. Windage I'm guessing is adjusted with a drift punch. I have not shot this gun yet so no idea how straight the M22 shoots. As for the cockeyed vertical piece, not a big deal to me as I'm planning on mounting a scope.

4) Front sight is mounted on a ramp held with a single screw. I have not removed the sight but i suspect that mounting any compensators (referring back to the G36 thread) will require some work as the barrel's diameter will be too small once that ramp is removed.

5) Weight feels decent and the trigger guard is metal

6) I have not taken apart the gun but some quick dimensions I have looked at are identical to the 10/22 (OAL, receiver length/width, barrel OD). My calipers are not as uber precise as some others I have seen to compare the two guns. I read that the barrel tang on the M22 is not the same size as the 10/22

7) Fasteners on this gun would have to be looked at very carefully as I'm thinking that the M22 might use metric screws.

On looks alone this gun looks much more like a cheap clone than a straight up direct copy. However, for its price, it would work just fine as a truck/quad/beater gun.

I'll bring it out shooting some time next week to give thoughts in that area...otherwise enjoy the pics...10/22 is on top, M22 is on bottom

For a $200 beater they are OK....mine has been reliable and fairly accurate.
So far my list of things that don't interchange are the barrels, take down screw, and scope mount holes....barrel stubs are different diameter, threads are a different pitch. Not much modding to be done with these rifles.

Looking at the Troy assembly vids, I see two issues:

1) takedown screw is a different size than in the kit. You'll have to use the original M22 screw and cut it down as the Troy takedown screw is shorter than OEM

2) barrel and front sight. You'll need to add something to up the OD of the barrel if you wish to mount a compensator

Otherwise looks good to go.

Seeing as you usually don't change the scope mount screws or takedown screw, I don't see how that would constitute a problem. The barrel stub IS a different diameter, true. It's not hard to sleeve a barrel stub either, though. AFAIK all of the internals will drop right in. So there is, in fact, a lot of modding you can do to these rifles, even without sleeving the barrel stub on any replacement barrels.

Troy chassis fits perfectly.

Well I put the VQ take down screws in my Rugers because I prefer Allen head to slot screws. Also good luck replacing it if you strip it BTW since it is proprietary.
The scope base with the RIA is a cheap piece of #### bolt on dovetail.... Again, I prefer Weaver rails so you are pretty limited, anything thicker won't fit with the existing screws ie Power Custom bases.
Really not a good alternative to the Ruger version if plans are to swap stuff out. Sleeve a barrel stub....why bother fcking around with a substandard semi-clone....waste of time and money lol...
Ruger base model for $250 is a better deal...no surprises and no fcking around trying to find stuff that fits.

Saw this thread and figured I could give some feedback, I bought a RIA M22 as my first rifle a little while back. I bought it for $220 cash from the local gun shop and hadn't done any research on it beforehand, just that I wanted a 10/22 of some sort. I've put about 1500 rounds through it so far so I'll point a few things out that bug me, some that the OP has already mentioned.

1) The scope rail mounting holes, for my rifle, seem to be threaded the same. I have Kwik-Site see through rings on my rifle and the supplied screws installed as they should. The included dovetail is still in the package but yeah, it looks really crappy.
2) The trigger pull is horrible. I just got a PC target hammer that will hopefully make it tolerable. I read that Ruger 10/22s are somewhere around 6-7lbs? This had to be up around 8-9lbs, or more. Could just be my gun.
3) I had played with a few 10/22s in other shops and for me the RIA's open sights are miles better than a Ruger, with the fibreoptic bead. OP is correct that the little shim under the sight is for adjusting elevation, a lot like a pellet rifle's rear sight. The front sight kept coming loose out of the box but a dab of loctite fixed that.
4) The finish is crap. The rear sight is painted with what seems like ####ty BBQ enamel.. One hit with a brass punch flaked a bunch off. The receiver is also painted and has a lot of gouges from shells and handling. The barrel looks like it was in the bluing salts for all of two seconds. Inside the top of the receiver, you saw a lot of overspray when new. Mine is pretty broken in now and the inside of the receiver is all pretty shiny. I had a PC oversized bolt handle installed as well and it took a big chunk out of my receiver after awhile. Switched to a skeletonized one and that problem stopped.
5) Takedown. I have also read that the TD screw is different. A lot of the pins don't seem to be very tight, although I'm not sure if a Ruger is the same way.

Functionally, it cycles and goes bang. Accuracy is what you'd expect from a 10/22. Eats any ammo. The bolt was not so smooth when new but has been broken in. I've put it in a Hogue stock and it fit damn perfect. Cheapie Simmons 3-9xAO Rimfire scope that works alright. Has a Power Custom extractor, skeletonized bolt handle, and waiting for the target hammer kit and nylon buffer to come. So I would say 90% of the mods you would to do a Ruger, you can do to an M22. Barrel is the biggest one and is kind of a sore spot for me. Here's a pic.

OVERALL: I'd say it's a damn good shooter for the price, although it definitely isn't pretty. I love mine, but if I knew then what I knew now, I would of bought a Ruger since I really enjoy tinkering. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Seems like a great gun for somebody who's just going to shoot it and clean it once in awhile with no fussing about mods.

Been sitting on the fence for a 10/22. I don't plan on ever modding beyond mounting a scope, so an RIA will probably be the direction to go.

Nobody makes "proprietary" screws any more. 10 seconds with one of these and you'll know what screws to replace them with.

Why bother? Because I can buy a RIA AND a green mountain barrel for the same price as a 10/22, and spend 1/2 an hour putting it on :S
