Rifle barrel weight or something else?

Just sitting down watching Wild tv and I see one of the guys shooting a high power rifle with what looks like a big rubber stopper on the rifle barrel just in front of the stock. I have now seen a couple of rifles with this sort of thing on them-is it some sort of vibration dampner or something else.

Yeah, they are supposed to act like the BOSS system on Brownings by adjusting vibration nodes as you move them up and down the barrel. I have no idea if they work. The theory is interesting, but they are really ugly.

They do work. The "old school" way was to use several castrating bands to change the vibrations.
