Always put an electrical tape over the muzzle in order to avoid foreign objects and water from entering the bore. On a freezing day, water inside the bore will turn to ice....

Electrical tape over the muzzle will not affect accuracy.

I think the damage to the crown of the barrel will affect accuracy a little.
He should probably rezero before attempting another shot....

I've been using painters tape. It keeps crap out, but it isn't sticky enough to leave glue on afterward.

I use the fingers from the blue nitrile gloves Costco sells. They are cheap as borscht and you can get 10 hunts out of a pair. Cut the finger about an inch and a half long and run a wrap of electrical tape around the open end. Easy to remove and leaves no residue. Also the light blue muzzle looks cool! LoL
