Hey there. Just bought my first hunting rifle. Put a couple of boxes of ammo through it. I've noticed that the black finish on the bolt is wearing away. Am I able to remove the rest of it myself safely? If so, how? Thanks, everyone in advance for your replies.

Just don’t. Why would you wish to accelerate wear? Also, it’s perfectly normal. Most guns with blues bolts will have wear marks on them. It’s one of the reasons many guns have polished bolts, or in the white.

It all depends on the finish applied as to how to remove it, but the finish is there for a reason the main one being rust prevention removing it will open the bolt up for rust and even the best finishes out there will wear. If it's not taking away from the use of the rifle it's probably best to leave it or pay a lot more getting a stronger finish on it which will also eventually wear.

If it were my rifle I wouldn't worry about it. Just shoot your new rifle, have fun and get ready for the upcoming hunting season!

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll just leave it like it is. I was just unsure because the finish has noticeable wear after just 40 rounds. Cheep finish I guess. It was an inexpensive rifle.

The blue finish on a firearm doesn't really prevent rust. It's a form of blue colored rust itself.

OP, the wear on your bolt is normal. If you don't like it, you're not alone. Lots of people will take a strip of crocus cloth and polish the rest of the blue off.

This can also smooth up the operation of the bolt. If you want to go a bit further, you might also want to carefully polish the recesses in the receiver, where the bolt passes through as well. All of this will smooth things up. Won't increase accuracy, or make it function better, just smoother.

The process of rust blueing is the formation of a protective magnetite layer on the steel. It is surface corrosion that is formed in a controlled way, then stopped, and neutralized. It prevents further formation of corrosion from the blueing process and helps prevent new rust formation - though prolongued exposure to moisture will eventually cause rusting. If you are curious as to how effective it is, polish and degrease a piece of steel and watch how quickly surface corrosion will form when no protective layer is present.

What color is the wear? A rem sps bolt will pick up copper off the shells right away and look like a gold color wear. You could probly remove it with copper solvent but I haven't bothered

Yes it is gold in colour. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the info
