Rifle Bolt Jeweling?

I bought a kit from Brownells years ago and did a couple of my own. If you have a drill press it is a very basic job to do on your own.

A drill press is just part of it... how do you index the bolt and space the swirls?

I have a fairly elaborate jig to do that in a drill press.

I built an indexer jig from an old typewriter carriage that worked excellent...indexed both rotationally & longitudinally with perfect spacing. many different patterns available with a machine that is accurate in it's spacings.

Graph paper works for the spacing. Free online sources for custom sized graph paper that you print out at home.

Clamp a ruler or other straight piece of wood on to the drill press table with the graph paper under it, so your jig is centered under the chuck.

Bolts (as in, nut and bolt) out of the hardware store are good practice stock. Practice lots, until you get a pattern you like.

it's a great do it yourself project, I'd rather work a street corner for gun money then jewel other people bolts for beer money

Maybe you'll consider renting out your tool for jeweling bolts, and he can have the experience of whoring himself out for beer money.

Interesting to know! How were the results? Pics?

Results weren't perfect but were better than what I started with. I did a Remington stainless SPS and the follower. I don't have any pictures of it. I did the bolt and floor plate. Probably 10 years ago.
