There are a ton based on the .308 case:

.22-08 (there are about 8 different versions floating around);
.243 Win;
.250-08 (Check out the .250 Humdinger!);
.260 Rem;
.270-08;
7mm-08 Rem;
.308 Win;
8mm-08;
.338 Fed;
.358 Win.

I think a switch-barrel rig, like a Savage, with several of these would be a hoot! Same as with the '06 family of cartridges.

I've had a 375 Whelen Improved for about 25 years. Fired a few thousand rounds down it, killed a big pile of game with it. I love it and reccomend it but if I had to do it again I'd do a 8mm/06 a 338/06 just because they are a bit more versatile. But don't write the 375 off as a 100 yard gun. Mine is only 200fps slower then a H&H and thus shoots really big bullets really flat. And kills really big animals really dead really quickly.

338/270 HGT(?) was another variation of the 338-06 from the 60's with just a smidgen more capacity to make no difference or advantage at all. It sounds cool though.

280 Ackley is a good option too.

Then there's the 35 Brown Whelan improved, the 333OKH where does it end?....

A 375-06 in Hawk, Whelen, Howell, etc is a more versatile cartridge than ever, due to the newer bullets.

Stick a .375 caliber 235gr TSX bullet in it, and you woudl probably get similar velocities to a 375 H&H with standard 270 grain bullets, and penetrate just as well...:)

In wildcatting, there's nothing new. The 30/06 and 308 have been wildcatted in every calibre from 22 to 416 (and larger has been tried as well) with every conceivable taper, neck length and shoulder angle. Sometimes the "genius" of this gets a name attached Like "Whelen", "Ackley", "Gibbs" or "Hawk", sometimes it's just as simple as, for example 25/06. With that extra 1/2 gr capacity, or two degrees of shoulder angle comes great claims of velocity (usually at greatly elevated pressures which is ok since there's no published data to hold you back), case life or accuracy. They're all good in their own way.

375 Scovill & 40 Whelan !

But if you had a 6.5-06 and a 35 Whelan, why would you want anything else ??? ;)

You are absolutely right those two would do it all in North america. I realize now that it would be almost impossible to have rifles on all the /06 case configerations.
The feed back has me looking at the Hawk cartridges which keeps me interested. I already have most areas covered, .22 / 6.5x55 / 06 / 308norma / 7mm mag / 338fed.
Of all the calibers I have owned I missed the 35 whelan I couldnt locate one when i was looking a few years back. Your 6.5/06 looks impressive in my reloading manuals, both very good choices.

I've had the 270 and 35 Whelan. If I had another '06 based cart it would be the 338/06. I think its the best of all, but can't support with facts.:cool: Would the 9.3X66 Sako be considered '06 based?

Um, no, no it's not. - dan

Now Dan, I know you have an '06 based cartridge for every calibre (and more than one in some cases), but do you for example, have a 6.5mm-06 with 1.5 degrees of body taper, a 0.243" neck and a 41 degree shoulder? It's been proven to be superior to 2 degrees of body taper, a 0.244" neck and a 40 degree shoulder. Exceeds 264 Win Mag velocities with my magic powder load. :p

I just gotta get me some of that "magic powder". Hear tell you can get 4000 fps and 1 inch groups out to 1400 yards with that stuff.:D - dan
