rifle for a pipsqueak?

buy him a 300 Savage, cheap, available, very shootable, been around forever, has filled many a freezer for decades, quite capable of food producing in this country, PM me, got one for sale! Your worries are over:)

Funny I was going to suggest a 250-3000 savage, or a 257 Roberts, but figured both of those are getting on the obscure side, and factory ammo is less accessible for 'em compared to a lot of the other suggestions...

I strongly suggest a good recoil pad on whatever you choose. For me, the best hunting rifle is one i don't notice the recoil when shooting from a bench rest.
I am not particularly recoil shy. That allows me to concentrate on the shot without fearing the gun.
If he is new he should shoot a box of shells offhand to get used to it. Even a 8 lb scoped 243 can "scope" your eyebrow if you don't hold it properly. I have done it. Didn't draw blood but got my attention.
In your price range i suggest a savage model 11 youth (so you can add a slip on recoil pad) in 7-08 or 243. The 243 with good hunting bullets (partitions) will be fine for anything he's likely to hunt. Put a WTB ad on the EE. Probably your cheapest option.

I was a skinny kid at 5'0" and 100 pounds and I shot a 30.06. I'm not saying this to be smarter or more manly, but recoil is a learned thing, and if it doesn't learn then shooting might not be ones sport.

It seems a tad cold, but I agree with this opinion. Started my both my girls off with a 22 to learn ' The Mechanism ' of shooting then right to man sized main battle rifles. Got a video of my daughter at 13 shooting grapefruit with an M44 ( she is a freaking Valkerie though ). There is such a thing as too much gun, but if you tell an inexperienced person " This rifle kicks " then it will...in their mind and in their opinion as well. Weight will tame the recoil; but if he can't carry the weight, and can't handle the recoil...maybe it's not for him.
Either than or he needs a Porter to carry it for him; which is OK, I've switched rifles with youths on a long hike...I knew it was getting to be too much for them.
But a lightweight rifle for a lightweight man, who can't handle recoil...but wants to hunt moose.
Seems a bit of a conundrum IMO. You can't have it all, I'm afraid

OP if I remember right you said you have a T/C Encore here is a link to IRUNGUNS in the States they are importers this link is for a 30-30 Encore barrel.

If you go this way if your buddy finds he can easily handle the recoil of the 30-30 you could either sell/trade the barrel or rechamber it.

Here is a link to a 25-06 Prohunter barrel I had my 25-06 Prohunter barrel shortened to 24" from the factory 28" shoots good.

Encores/Prohunters are not overly light guns so recoil should be somewhat reduced my Prohunter with flex stock and the 24" 25-06 barrel with a Leupold Compact 3-9X scope mounted weighs 8.5lbs.

or you could watch the EE for a barrel or put a WTB add in for a barrel chambered in a cartridge you want to try.

Is it a tang safety?? Darn, I have a soft spot for those...

yes it is! We have a snow storm/blizzard just starting here, but I will run it to town and mail it out to you right-o-way:)

If you are interested, PM me your email address, I have it mine with pics and full description.
