here is a question, what would you guys recommend for a rifle for the hunter who travels within canada to carry for a hunting rifle in case the opportunity presents itself?

for example, i live in southern bc, but often pass through nothern bc while working. as well, i am often in alberta during hunting season and can go with a resident "hunter host". so my potential hunting season while working/travelling is from august 1 til november 30.

some qualifications:

1. must be legal in bc and alberta (does alberta still have the case length of 45mm being the minimum allowed?).

2. must fit into a soft case that either doesn't look like a guncase or into a duffle bag with cloths. this is so it can be carried into hotels/relatives/friends houses without drawing attention (vehicle break-ins are far too common to leave a rifle overnight).

3. no scope is required.

4. must not cost an arm and a leg, ie: dakota takedown. nor should the ammo be expensive or hard to come by (it is also nice to spend some downtime at the range without going broke or carrying lots of reloads with me).

some options that i have thought of; winchester or marlin lever action with the buttstock removed for transport, CZ858 with folding stock (if 7.62x39 is legal in alberta for big game), savage 99 takedown, ruger #1 with the buttstock removed for transport.

any ideas?

AB no longer has a min case length. I used 357 mag in a Marlin 1894 last year there for deer no problem...

How about an NEF Handi Rifle single shot in what ever calibre you desire. It'll fit all of your criteria....
- can be taken apart to fit in a duffle
- is cheap
- can be gotten with just open sights
- they are manufactured in lots of different calibres (30-06, 243, 45-70, to name a few)

if i remember right i think you can hunt the the cz858, when i bought mine i think he said i could use it for deer. i wasnt paying attention to him, i was busy drooling on the cz lol

MiG25, the answer to your question is simple, and you probably already have the rifle! Any properly bedded bolt action in the caliber of your choice. :D

Just remove the guard screws, take the barrelled action out of the stock, and replace the triggerguard/floorplate assembly to protect the trigger assembly. Secure the barrelled action with some kind of trigger lock or cable and pack it in the duffle.

I have done this for years, usually rolled up in my bedroll, and have never had the point of impact change enough to make any difference hunting.

Try it! Take it to the range and shoot a group. Take it apart, pack it up and leave it packed until you go to the range the next time. Unpack it, put it back togeteher and try it again. Do this several times. You will be amazed at how little the POI changes, if the rifle is bedded properly.

Let us know how you make out.

You know, that sounds like a superb idea, WN.:)
I guess if you have a heavy sporting barrel on a rifle you enjoy using at the range but the varmint style stock it has is unsuitable for dragging up hills there's no reason why you couldn't have a second synth stock that was also bedded for that barreled action for hunting use.
Now you've got me thinking.;)
BTW, MiG25, if your rifle is a SMLE, lever gun, Ruger #1 or other variety of rifle with 2 piece timber all you need to do is remove the butt.
On that basis a nice No4 MkI .303 with the rear aperture sight would be perfect.
The 303 has taken plenty of Canadian game (and Aussie game for that matter!) and they're hardy rifles.
Just pop a Pachmeyer Slip-On pad to tame that brass buttplate and have a nice long screwdriver for the stock bolt.
Surely you can get 303 ammo anywhere in Canada, even out in the boondocks.

I'm even lazier than Whynot....I bought a soft shell golf club case for $50 in Winners...I just stick a rifle (or 3) in it, gun case and all. Head right on in to the Super 8 without a second glance.

If I'm feeling funky, I use a guiter case; the kind with back-pack straps, like the hippies used to wander around with. It's a bit short, but my hacked-off .338 fits, as do my HVA featherweights. Both bags have lots of extra pouches here and there for ammo & stuff.

Traveling with a rifle is second nature - not having one within reach sort of feels like going around without my pants on!

Tumbleweed, that is brilliant. You are even more devious than I am. :D

I'd get a Marlin lever gun and take the butt stock off. Removing one screw shortens the rifle to not much over two feet and it goes back together with absolutely no loss of zero. That's a cheap, handy and available as it gets for a good takedown rifle.

golfclubs in alberta in november or ft nelson in october might be a little out of place.

Well you know, I've lived in Alberta most of my life, and I've also spent a quite a bit of time in Ft. Nelson. I've got to say that you'd have to act damn awful crazy to seem out of place in Ft. Nelson most months of the year.....:D

Aside from that, the guitar case works too...;) ....winter months and all.

well, i think i am leaning towards a winchester 94 or a marlin or lee enfield #5

none of them are "true" takedowns but the buttstock can be removed. and 30 WCF and 303 ammo are everywhere.

Thompson Center Encore. They take down in seconds!
You can pack any combination of rifles, shotguns, scopes, stocks, whatever you need for anything into a 24 inch suitcase.
No need to check for zero with a Leupold quick detach system and a log book for your scope settings.
I like the sound of a Pro Hunter in .375H&H, 270Win and 12 Gauge combo.
Check out this sytem... make sure you look at the caliber chart!

Right on! I think a combo gun , barrel change system or rifled barrel slug gun will be a good EVERYWHERE hunting gun because there is shotgun only area.
